ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE

JUNE 2nd, 2017 12pm-1pm

Experience arts-based research spaces & a performative workshop

Un/Fold research through the Arts and connect the thin walls of our HeARTS

Feminst sociologist Leavy defines arts-based research practices as:

“ […] a set of methodological tools used by researchers across disciplines during all phases of social research, including data generation, analysis, interpretation, and representation. These emerging tools adapt the tenets of the creative arts in order to address social research questions in holistic and engaged ways in which theory and practice are intertwined (2008, pp. 2–3)”.

This year, Arts Kaleidoscope celebrates diversity in research processes and practices united through the arts. We are excited about living, using and embodying arts-based research methodologies and arts-based methods by incorporating any art form or mixed media in the research process, and in any field or fields thereof.

In this spirit, Arts Kaleidoscope invites conversations concerning inter-connected, experimental, disruptive and performative forms of engagement with arts-based research and methods in a critical, ethical, loving, and empathetic manner. To this end, collaboratively we will create a performative workshop space at the Faculty of Education from 12pm-1 pm, to reflect, experience and critique the use of arts-based research methods. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with a films and a mixed arts-based research space at their own pace during the day.

Arts Kaleidoscope, the brainchild of professor Pam Burnard, has now been celebrating arts- based research methodologies and practices as a living process and inquiry questioning the authority of the linear presentations in academia since 2012. Arts Kaleidoscope takes place during the annual student research Kaleidoscope Conference 01-02 June 2017 at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. All are welcome to join in disrupting tradition with transition!
