Assistant Dean of Students for Intercultural Affairs/ Director of the Intercultural Community Center Student Affairs

Summary Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean is responsible for directing efforts to conceptualize, assess, and cultivate diversity and inclusive programs, services and offer educational initiatives that foster inclusive environments for all students. The Assistant Dean for Intercultural Affairs/Director of the Intercultural Community Center is responsible for efforts designed to encourage a diverse student population to have a positive college experience, increase retention rates and foster successful outcomes. Efforts of the Assistant Dean will broaden students’ cultural understanding with activities designed to encourage exploration of real world cultural interactions designed to broaden and enrich students’ academic experience.

Essential Functions 1. Direct activities and staff in the Intercultural Center and the Center for Gender Equity. 2. Co-director, with faculty member, the Multicultural Summer Institute and serve as the primary Student Affairs Administrator. 3. Coordinate with faculty, Student Affairs administrators and students the yearlong MSI program. 4. Supervise the Assistant Director of Intercultural Affairs, co-supervise the ICC Program Coordinator, and supervise the ICA Graduate Assistant. 5. Responsible for the First Generation Student Program and the First Gen Parents Program. 6. Facilitate staff collaboration among Intercultural Affairs and Resident Education and Housing Services to foster a strong community in the Multicultural Hall (Pauley Hall). 7. Coordinate campus-wide efforts to promote diversity and equity among students by working collaboratively with academic and Student Affairs deans, directors and the leadership of student clubs and organizations. 8. Provide diversity and cultural competency training for Divisional professional staff and offer to others who are interested. 9. Encourage and participate in efforts to develop programs that will familiarize historically underrepresented students with the range of opportunities available at Occidental designed to enhance both intellectual and career success; introduce students to range of high impact practices that will increase student retention and student engagement. 10. Create opportunities for first generation and underrepresented students to visit the Career Development Center. 11. Partner with the Office of Student Life to create multicultural educational initiative for Orientation. 12. Design and utilize assessment measures to monitor, evaluate, and improve the progress or programs established to enhance diversity. 13. Serve as a consultant for students and staff in the development of living/learning communities with social justice as a core value. 14. Serve as a resource in coordinating diversity and inclusion training programs for faculty, staff, and students. 15. Responsible for establishing, measuring, and assessing the goals, and learning outcomes of diversity and inclusion programs and services. 16. Co-chair the Bias Incident Response Team. 17. Manage the budget of the Intercultural Community Center and Center for Gender Equity. 18. Prepare and present Staff Annual Performance Appraisals. 19. Participate in activities and programs of the Student Affairs Division and college administration as appropriate. 20. Participate in professional on-call duty rotation. 21. Serve as judicial hearing officer. 22. Serve as a member of the Student Support Team to identify and support students of concern. 23. Serve as a member of the senior management team of Student Affairs. 24. Represent the Dean of Students Office on various committees: Retention, Enrollment Management, WASC Working Group, Commencement, and Campus Event Approval Committee. 25. Serve on interview and selection committee for the Values and Vocations Grant. 26. Other duties as required. Job Skills/Requirements  Master’s degree required.

 Minimum 4 years’ professional experience, student affairs experience strongly preferred

 Exceptional ability to communicate controversial and complex issues to diverse audiences.

 Ability to maintain a pleasant demeanor while under pressure in a variety of situations.

 A collaborative style and ability to accomplish goals through working with others in a constructive, positive, and non-confrontational manner.

 Analytical skills to review data and implement programs based on data analysis.

 Self-motivated and able to alternate easily between working independently and in a team.

 Ability to create and maintain open dialogue with all of the College’s constituents to nurture an atmosphere of collegiality, shared inquiry, shared responsibility, and collective accomplishment.

 Diplomatic skills needed to build relationships, interact with a variety of constituents and adeptly manage situations of conflict.

 An extensive understanding of organizational change and commitment to advance change through challenging times.

 An understanding of the political landscape and experience responding to politically charged or politically sensitive situations.
