To Have and to Have Not submitted by Frank Munro

Taken from the epic novel by novelist John Steinbeck, depicting the Great Depression, this title is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about my nephew, Bill (Billy) Crompton.

Billy was recently married, December 2, in Seattle, WA to a beautiful girl, Anne Walker. What makes them so unique is they are missionaries, athletic coaches and educators and that passion has brought them together. They leave for Thailand February 4th for, as for now, a couple of years.

The organization they work for, Ambassadors in Sports, in Cleveland, Ohio has 16 similar missions around the world. Their mission statement is as follows; To communicate the good news of Jesus Christ to all countries and people groups through football (soccer).

Their vision is to see indigenous football ministry in every country and people groups, empowering the church to engage the football culture at every level, leading the transformation of individuals and communities through the power of the gospel.

They are both returning to one of the more difficult assignments of the organization. Chaing Mai in northern Thailand, a days drive from Bangkok, borders Laos and war torn Myanmar (formerly Burma). At any given time there may be up to 100 refugee/ orphans from Myanmar cramped into their church school. No one is every turned away. For these children this is their only hope.

Billy grew up in Allentown, PA. and attended Messiah, a Christian college in Grantham, PA. While finding his calling in Christ he also amassed a stellar athletic career. Messiah College has won the last 8 of 11 NCAA National Division 111 Soccer Championships. Billy, an All-American was team captain and tournament MVP. Anne grew up in Seattle and attended Northwest Univ., a life- long participant of Boys and Girls Club, excelled in basketball as a player and coach. Neither of these two young adults have needs for material wealth only for the rewards of a spiritual life.

From the classic line of the great actor Henry Fonda in To Have and To Have Not, “ These are the times that try men’s souls” well Billy and Anne are trying to save a few souls with a soccer ball.

You can send your prayers and wishes to them via email: [email protected] and visit Ambassadors in Sports.com to view the Thailand mission.

Synopsis of Pray the Devil Back to Hell: Pray the Devil Back to Hell is the gripping account of a group of brave and visionary women who demanded peace for Liberia, a nation torn to shreds by a decades-old civil war. The women’s historic yet unsung achievement finds voice in a narrative that intersperses contemporary interviews, archival images, and scenes of present-day Liberia together to recount the experiences and memories of the women who were instrumental in bringing lasting peace to their country.

The group will meet again, March 20, 2012 at 7 p.m., location TBA. Our next read is: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking?Meet one funny dog—Enzo, the lovable mutt who tells this story. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: most dogs love to chase cars, but Enzo longs to race them. He learns about racing and the world around him by watching TV and by listening to the words of his best friend, Denny, an up-and-coming race car driver, and his daughter, ZoË, his constant companion. Enzo finds that life is just like being on the racetrack—it isn’t simply about going fast. And, applying the rules of racing to his world, Enzo takes on his family’s challenges and emerges a hero. In the end, Enzo holds in his heart the dream that Denny will go on to be a racing champion with his daughter by his side. For theirs is an extraordinary friendship—one that reminds us all to celebrate the triumph of the human (and canine) spirit.

Community Concert Series at St. Michael’s presents

THE BOSTON STRING QUARTET

Sunday, February 12, 2012, 3:00pm

The BSQ is not your usual string quartet. These high-energy musicians perform unique arrangements of classical chamber music, rock, jazz, world music and more, as they continually explore new ways of sparking musical interest. They can get pretty funky! This highly acclaimed group is currently Ensemble-in- Residence at the School of Groove in Cambridge, Mass, a contemporary music school that provides students with an environment that is conducive to exploration. Don’t miss this unusual concert!

Tickets: $20 General Admission; $15 Seniors; $10 Students, available thirty days prior to each event at Paper Packaging & Panache, 418 Hope Street (corner of Court St.) or at the door. For further information, visit the CCS website at ccsatsm.org

HOSPITAL VISITATION

16 Please let the church office know (401-253-7717) if you or someone in your family is in the hospital so that we may extend Pastoral Care. With government regulations, Health Information Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA), if a hospitalized person does not choose to be listed in the hospital directory, one would not know about his/her being in the hospital.
