Computer Applications Syllabus for Students and Parents School District of South Milwaukee Essential Standards for Business and Marketing Education

Essential Standard A. Communications: Students in South Milwaukee will communicate in a clear, courteous, and correct manner on personal and professional levels.

Essential Standard B. Information Systems/Technology: Students in South Milwaukee will select and apply current information systems/technology as they relate to personal and business decision-making in light of ethical and social issues.

Essential Standard C. Financial Procedures: Students in South Milwaukee will use financial procedures to make decisions about planning, organizing, and allocating resources.

Essential Standard D. Economics: Students in South Milwaukee will use critical-thinking skills to function as citizens who are literate about economics through development of personal consumer economic skills and a knowledge of societal and government responsibility.

Essential Standard E. Management and Entrepreneurship: Students in South Milwaukee will use business knowledge and preparation to develop an understanding of business operations to become entrepreneurs and to make informed management decisions.

Essential Standard F. Marketing: Students in South Milwaukee will describe how marketing strategies are used in business to meet the needs of consumer.

Essential Standard G. Principles of Law: Students in South Milwaukee will apply the basic legal principles to their roles as citizens, consumers, and employees.

Essential Standard H. Interpersonal and Leadership Skills: Students in South Milwaukee will demonstrate interpersonal teamwork and leadership skills necessary to function in various business settings.

Essential Standard I. Career Development: Students in South Milwaukee will explore careers and develop skills necessary to make meaningful decisions in a variety of business careers. Students will develop a career cluster focus based on their career development process. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS I COURSE SPECIFIC BENCHMARKS

Course Title: Computer Applications I Course Number: 1123 Credit: 1 Credit Grade: 9-12 Honors Course MATC Accepted Articulation Course- Advanced Standing

This course is designed for students to master keyboarding without looking at the keys and use correct fingering and basic operations of a computer. Students will become familiar with the word processing program Microsoft Word and will be introduced to basic terminology and concepts. Through practical applications, students will learn tool bar functions and be able to format various letter styles, reports, outlines, tables, memos, and other business documents. Emphasis is continued throughout the school year on increasing keyboarding accuracy and speed; timed writings are used for assessment. Those intending to go into the study of computers will find touch typing, as learned in this course, very beneficial.

Standard B – Information Systems/Technology. Students in South Milwaukee will select and apply current information systems/technology as they relate to personal and business decision- making in light of ethical and social issues.

Course Specific Benchmarks:  Develop touch keyboarding skills at acceptable speed and accuracy levels.  Operate functions of a word processing program e.g. save, print, bold, changing font, etc.  Produce letters, memorandums, tables and reports.  Demonstrate how to incorporate graphics into business documents.  Demonstrate how to efficiently key numbers using the numeric keypad.  Demonstrate and practice ethical procedures regarding office technology.  Show how to import documents and graphics from other software and resources.  Demonstrate how to merge information into letters, lists, envelopes, etc.  Use spreadsheet software to create, store, retrieve, update, and delete data.  Demonstrate how to use the functions of the drawing toolbar in Microsoft Word.  Complete an office simulation.

Grading

 Assignments, written work, and speed are based on a percentage of 100 possible points.  Writing Prompts will be scored using the district 6-trait rubric and exemplars.  Weighting scale for assessment categories, grading scale, and technique evaluation scale is as follows: COMPUTER APPLICATIONS ASSESSMENTS Computer Applications I and Word Processing for Personal Use 1st Quarter CATEGORY PERCENT OF GRADE TIMINGS: 3 minute Technique 60-70% A 32+ wpm Classwork 15-25% B 27-32 wpm Timings 15-25% C 22-26 wpm D 0-21 wpm 2nd Quarter CATEGORY PERCENT OF GRADE TIMINGS: 3 minute Technique 20-40% A 38+ wpm Classwork 60-80% B 33-37 wpm Timings 10-20% C 28-32 wpm D 0-27 wpm 3rd Quarter CATEGORY PERCENT OF GRADE TIMINGS: 3 minute Technique 0-15% A 44+ wpm Classwork 70-90% B 39-43 wpm Timings 10-30% C 34-38 wpm D 0-33 wpm 4th Quarter CATEGORY PERCENT OF GRADE TIMINGS: 5 minute Technique 0-15% A 44+ wpm Classwork 70-90% B 39-43 wpm Timings 10-30% C 34-38 wpm D 0-33 wpm

Grading Scale: 93-100 = A, 85-92 = B, 77-84 = C, 70-76 = D, 69 or below = F

Posture- Sitting up straight, feet flat on the floor 5 points

Fingers – Using correct fingers to strike the keys. Hands stationary 8 points

Eyes- Eyes on copy, not keys 8 points

Citizenship- Class behavior, tardiness, talking 4 points
