10th Grade Biology History of Life

Project: Extinct Species Poster and Presentation

Your Task:

You will work individually to produce a poster that describes the characteristics of both your assigned extinct species as well as the time period in which they lived in. Additionally, your poster will be presented to the class and used to create a large scale geological timeline. This project will serve as part of your assessment over the History of Life unit.

Procedure:

 Students will be assigned an extinct species that they are to research both in and outside class.

 Each student will be given class time to complete the project over the next two weeks of class.

 Access to tablets and computers will be provided during class time.

 Final projects will be due on Wednesday May 7th and presentations will occur during Wednesday and Thursday of that week.

Requirements:

The poster must include the following information:

 One detailed paragraph (6-8 sentences) describing the characteristics of assigned extinct species including: their scientific classification and what they looked like.

 Two detailed paragraphs (6-8 sentences) describing the time period, according to the geologic time scale, that they live in including: how many years ago this was, what major events happened during this time and what the animals and plants were like.

 One picture (Either printed or drawn)

 One source to be included in bibliography

Grading: Each student will be graded according the Rubric. The Rubric will be provided to students on Monday April 28th.

This assignment will be worth 30 formal points

Tablet Policy:

There will be a strict policy regarding tablet usage. Students that do not follow the policy will lose their tablet privileges and will be given alternative assignments to be completed during tablet time and on the students own time.

Students will be held to the following list of expectations regarding the tablets:

 Students will only use the tablets for research and internet searching related to their topic.

 Students will not download applications, make use of camera, or temper with any settings currently set on the tablets.

 Students will treat the tablets and tablet equipment with respect and care.

 Students will follow ALL teacher instructions the 1st time they are given or risk losing tablet privileges.

Grading:

Each group will be graded as a group according the Rubric. The Rubric will be provided to students on Wednesday May 22nd.

This assignment will be worth 20% of your grade for the 4th grading period.

This project is due on: Wednesday May 29th
