Soccer How-Tos Dribbling, Turning, & Shielding
Tick-Tock Step-Arounds o Every player has a ball – start with ball between feet, knees bent o Every player has a ball – start with ball between feet, knees bent o On “Go”, Tap ball between feet o On “Go”, move one foot around the back of the ball (toward other foot) & then around the front of the ball. Foot ends where it started o Count each tap o Then, do the other foot o First to 20 wins – or count taps in 30 seconds o First to 20 wins – or count “foot laps” in 30 seconds o Tip: keep knees bent and tap ball with front of foot o Teaches: Fast feet & part of the ‘scissors’ feint o Teaches: Touch & ball control using inside of feet
Circle & Outside-of-Foot Push Basic Dribbling J. Smith o Every player has a ball – start with ball between feet and slightly in front Inside the Foot Dribble in a zig-zag, right foot 4 touches to the left o Move the right foot forward & around the front of the ball so that the outside Stop the ball with inside of the left foot of the right foot is touching the ball on its left side. Dribble with the inside of the left foot 4 touches to the right o Push the ball softly to the right (2-3 feet). Turn to your right, and do it again Step Over with the right foot. Dribble Inside-the-foot, but after 4 touches with the right foot… o Do 10 “circle pushes” with the Right Foot & then 10 with the Left Foot Fake another touch and slide the right foot over the top of the ball… Put your weight on the right foot and dribble to the right using the left foot. o First to 10 for each wins Repeat again after 4 touches to the right…Step over with the left foot and come back in a zig-zag with the right foot. o Tip: keep knees bent and tap ball with front of foot Outside the Foot Turn right foot inwards (pigeon-toe), point the toe down and lock the ankle Push the ball to the right with outside of the foot on a 45 angle o Teaches: Footwork & use of outside-of-foot to control ball Zig-Zag – 4 touches, stop ball with inside of right foot Dribble on 45 angle with outside of left foot to the left side – 4 touches Repeat Zig-Zag

Turning – DRAG BACK & CUT BACK J. Smith Turning – OUTSIDE/INSIDE THE FOOT J. Smith DRAG BACK OUTSIDE THE FOOT o Put right foot on top of the ball o Stand on left side of ball, lift right toe while keeping heel on the ground o Drag the ball back with the sole of your foot while turning your body to the o Swivel the right foot to the right and turn the ball backwards, turn your whole right body at the same time o Dribble forward again and repeat with the left foot o Right foot becomes a hook to turn the ball in the opposite direction o Progress by dribbling forward and then sliding the left foot past or in front of the ball… CUT BACK o Right foot then swivels to the right and hooks the ball back o Dribble forward…Cut the ball back using the side of the right foot o Turn towards the left, swivel on your left foot and go back in the opposite direction INSIDE THE FOOT o Dribble forward again and repeat with the left foot o Dribble forward using the inside of the foot o Turn in a circle using the inside of the right foot o Dribble in the opposite direction and repeat using the left foot
Dribbling – Inside-Outside J. Smith Shielding J. Smith o Using the right foot, make one touch with the inside of the foot and then one o Play keep-away against an imaginary defender with the outside of the foot o Dribble with the inside of the right foot to your left…little touches Repeat using the left foot – one inside touch, then one outside touch o o Stop the ball with the left foot and dribble in the opposite direction with your o Increase the touches – 2 with inside, then 2 with outside, then 3 … left foot o Keep your body between the defender and the ball…shielding the ball from the defender o Remember you must be within touching distance of the ball or you will be obstructing the defender from getting to the ball

Dribble Across a Square Dribble Relay o 4-cone square, 12-15 yards wide. Every player has a ball. Set up an 'obstacle-course' with cones as 'gates' - and team 'A' races team 'B' o Spread players around square facing inward They have to go out and back - if they lose control and miss a gate, they have to regain control and go through the gate. Variation is to have a small 'square' at the end. They have to stop the ball in the o Players must dribble across square and back – count “laps” square, then sprint back and high-five the next player before he/she can go. o Perform a “Drag Back” or “Hook Turn” to reverse direction Variation is to have several parents positioned at different places along the o First to N-turns Wins – or Count turns in 60 seconds 'course' and have a different one hold up a number of fingers at random times during the race - and award points to the player that sees it and correctly yells out the number first.
