CITY OF SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE APPRAISER – ASSESSING OFFICE The City of South Portland is seeking an Appraiser to join an innovative, proactive, highly skilled and dynamic workforce with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in municipal service. A full time position, working in a supportive team environment within the Office of the Assessor, the Appraiser is a specialized technical and professional entry level position who assists in determining the valuation of real and personal property for tax assessment purposes for the cities of South Portland and Westbrook. This position involves extensive public contact, independent professional judgment, initiative, and analytical abilities. Education and Experience: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree and at least two years of related experience is preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and/or equivalent experience or aptitude in assessing and/or appraising or related field such as real estate.
Competencies: The candidate must possess ability to learn to interpret and apply knowledge of assessing laws and guidelines and understand other best practices in the valuation of real estate and business personal property. Candidate must have good communication skills in order to understand and be able to explain technical valuation information to property owners and members of the public. The candidate must possess excellent customer service skills, be resourceful and able to work independently, pay attention to detail, communicate effectively and courteously with co-workers and the general public and exercise sound judgement. Must be able to learn to measure and list all types of real and personal property. Able to handle multiple tasks requiring a high level of organization. Must have valid Maine driver’s license. Must have current Maine Assessor Certification (CMA or CAT) or able to obtain within 18 months of hire.
