Title Scripture Development Co-ordinator

Reporting to Director of National Programme & Research

Location London or Swindon

Summary of role: Bible Society’s primary aim is to encourage and enable people in the UK and beyond to fully engage with the Bible. In this, we are fulfilling our Royal Charter to achieve ‘the wider circulation and use of Scripture’.

This role is focused on fulfilling this aim within the context of the Catholic community in England and Wales, and has been developed in partnership with the Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales (CBCEW).

The Scripture Development Coordinator is focused on supporting, promoting and strengthening the biblical apostolate in the Catholic community in England and Wales, and increasing Bible Society’s capacity to serve the growing scriptural needs and interest of this community.

Main responsibilities  Alongside Bible Engagement and Publishing colleagues, (Bible Society, 3 days per identifying, researching, editing and reviewing new products week): and resources to enhance Catholic biblical engagement; creatively contributing to these resources where necessary.

 As part of our wider Bible Engagement strategy, managing and delivering 1-2 key Catholic-focused initiatives on behalf of Bible Society.

 Alongside our Church Relationship and Supporter Services teams, mapping, monitoring and growing the database of Catholic individuals, parishes and schools; working to develop a coherent communications and contact plan with respect to

 Networking and identifying opportunities for collaboration amongst key strategic partners, including those working in the spheres of Catholic education, liturgy and spirituality, social justice, youth ministry and migrant Catholic communities.

 Working with the Director of National Programme, successfully influencing all other departments in Bible Society to understand the Catholic audience more fully, including being available to review and comment on communications, initiatives and projects from a Catholic theological, ecclesiological and pastoral perspective.

Main responsibilities  Proactively building working relationships with other Bishops’ (CBCEW, 2 days per Conference Departments, with Catholic individuals and week): organisations, and with ecumenical partners, who have an overlapping interest in and concern for Scripture.

 Undertaking Scripture-related projects, which have been identified as priorities for CBCEW.

 Ensure the smooth running of the Scripture Working Group (which meets approximately 4-6 times per annum), as an instrument of the Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis. This will include minute-taking, meeting organisation, logistics etc. and working with the Chair of the Scripture Working Group and Department Secretary.

 Developing and delivering coherent communications, targeting those engaged in the biblical apostolate, including database management, compiling a monthly eNewsletter, and managing, cataloguing and providing material for upload to the web.

 Coordinating the annual process of preparing, delivering and evaluating the ‘Catholic Bible Sunday’ resource pack each December, working in service of members of the Scripture Working Group.

 Overseeing the delivery of future scripture events and conferences, as requested.

General:  Report accurately to Bible Society and CBCEW on budget and timescales etc. ensuring project documentation is filed in a timely and efficient manner.

 Participating fully in the corporate life of Bible Society, by attending All Staff Meetings, departmental meetings and

 Similarly, participating in the life of CBCEW by attending Staff Meetings and attending occasional staff gatherings and services.

 As appropriate, attend Catholic Biblical Federation meetings and other gatherings, meetings etc.

 Adhere to Bible Society’s policies and standards in all your work.

 Participate, when possible, in the corporate life of Bible Society, including attending all staff and team meetings as required.

 Carry out ad hoc duties which may be required to ensure Bible Society and CBCEW work is done as effectively as possible.

Qualification, knowledge, experience and skills:

Essential  A sound working knowledge of the Bible and Catholic theological approaches to Scripture.

 Proven ability to project manage effectively, including working with multiple stakeholders and overlapping deadlines.

 Proven ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in writing and in person.

 Competent in using Microsoft Office and can quickly learn new IT packages.

 Ability to handle administrative tasks, including minute-taking and meeting arrangements.

Desirable  A degree or formal qualification in Theology, Religious Studies or Biblical Studies.

 Experience of using online web content management and newsletter tools.

 Experience of using Adobe Creative Suite or other graphics editing software.

 Experience of managing successful events, including scheduling, promoting, content development, understanding booking and budgeting etc.

 Experience of managing and reporting on a budget.

Terms

 This full-time post is funded for an initial period of three years.  The Scripture Development Coordinator will be seconded to CBCEW for two days per week, and will be based at CBCEW in Victoria, London for these two days.  The Scripture Development Coordinator will be line managed by the Director of National Programme and Research at Bible Society (Matthew van Duyvenbode), and will be work-managed by the General Secretary of the CBCEW, Fr Christopher Thomas, during the seconded days.

Page 4 of 5  This role will be based either in Bible Society (Swindon) or CBCEW (London) for 3-4 days per week and will include regular travel nationally. Travel between Swindon and London, and for external meetings, will be covered by expenses.  Subject to the agreement of the role’s managers, occasional flexibility may be required to temporarily adjust the balance of work responsibilities, particularly in the run up to events etc.
