News from Deakin University  Medicine Information Evening Deakin University offers the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS), a four-year, graduate-entry program and is accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

The School of Medicine at Deakin will be holding a Medicine Information Evening at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus and attendees will learn about the courses and pathways available in medicine and optometry at Deakin.

News from RMIT University  RMIT Experience Days 2014 RMIT University offers a number of free events designed to give students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to engage in real hands-on workshops, explore life on campus. These free events will run between Monday 30 June – Friday 4 July, during the school holidays, and get behind the scenes. These activities are free but students are encouraged to register early as numbers are limited and these workshops are very popular.  Hospital Laboratory Visits The hospital lab tours provide students interested in a career as a medical scientist the chance to go behind the scenes into a laboratory. Students get to see the inner workings of a laboratory, and to see where third year RMIT laboratory medicine students complete their professional practice. These free full day sessions are held at various major hospitals. The visits will take place during the week of Monday 7 – Friday 11 July 2014. News from Bond University  Bond University Information Seminar Bond University is hosting a free Information Session – Investing in your Future – for senior students and their families to learn about:

 Scholarships at Bond University Bond University offers an extensive scholarship program to both domestic and international students, with values ranging from 25% scholarships to 100%. It is important to note that applications for the 2015 Scholarship Program for Australian Year 12 students are now open and close on 31 July 2014.

There are a range of scholarships, including:

1. The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship – awarded to a Year 12 student with exceptional academic achievements, an expected ATAR of over 96, proven leadership ability and personal character. The value of this scholarship is 100% tuition fees for any single or combined degree (excluding MBBS). TIP: As this is the most prestigious scholarship offered by Bond University, applicants are encouraged to take their time completing their personal statements to reflect their strengths and achievements.

2. The Australia Day Scholarship – awarded to a talented and motivated Year 12 student enrolled in a Victorian school. This scholarship is awarded to a student demonstrating strong leadership skills, an extensive involvement in extra-curricular activities and an expected ATAR of over 90. The value of this scholarship is 100% tuition fees for any single or combined degree (excluding MBBS). TIP: Applicants should ensure they highlight their community and school service achievements in their personal statement.

3. Corporate Scholarships – awarded to Year 12 students with an anticipated ATAR of over 92, demonstrating exceptional potential, and aimed at developing these students into the leaders and visionaries of the future. The value of the scholarships is 50% and, in addition to this, the sponsoring corporate firms assume a mentoring role by providing students with the opportunity of applying their studies through an internship. TIP: Applicants applying for this scholarship are reminded to know which Corporate Scholarship they are applying for, and complete research about the company for which they are applying. 4. The John Burton Cadetship – awarded to a high-achieving Year 12 student who has a demonstrated commitment to a career in journalism and apply for the Bachelor of Journalism. The value of this scholarship contributes 50% towards tuition fees and the student is expected to work at the Gold Coast Bulletin as a paid cadet on a semester-on, semester-off basis. TIP: Students applying for this scholarship are encouraged to highlight their commitment to a career in journalism, their leadership skills as well as involvement in extra-curricular activities.

5. The Undergraduate Dean’s Scholarships – awarded to students who have demonstrated very high academic and leadership achievements, along with their overall contribution throughout secondary school. The value of the scholarships is up to 40% tuition fees, and is at faculty discretion, but again excludes the MBBS. TIP: These scholarships are based on academic merit, so students should ensure they attach their Year 11 & Year 12 school reports with their application and highlight key academic achievements and demonstrate strong leadership skills.

News from the University of Melbourne  ‘UniExperience Day’ at Melbourne UniExperience is two-day program for Year 11 students to go on campus and experience university life first-hand. Students stay on campus in one of the residential college and take part in a series of engaging and interactive activities covering all aspects of tertiary study. The program includes:

 One night accommodation and meals  A guided campus tour  Information on Melbourne courses  Workshops on the transition to university, student support, accommodation and financial options, scholarships and study tips  Social activities organised by current university students

There will be an opportunity to hear from current students about what it is like to study at Melbourne and attend tailored sessions to learn more about entry requirements, course structures and other opportunities available to Melbourne students. A tour of the Southbank campus will also be included in the program for those who wish to visit the Victorian College of the Arts.

Careers in Public Relations Public relations officers work with individuals or companies to plan, develop and put in place information and communication to the public. They aim to help people understand organisations, their product and services and their contribution to the community.

Public relation officers can be involved in -

 monitoring public opinion regarding an organisation or particular issues  present arguments on behalf of an organisation to government, other organisations and special interest groups  respond to enquiries from the public, media and other organisations  arrange interviews with journalists, prepare and distribute media releases, and liaise with and make statements to the media  write, edit and arrange production of newsletters, in-house magazines, pamphlets and brochures  assist with preparing organisational documents such as annual reports, corporate profiles and submissions  write speeches, prepare visual aids and make public presentations  manage websites  organise special events such as open days, visits, exhibitions and functions  conduct internal communication courses, workshops and media training

Personal requirements of a successful public relations officer:

 interested in people  able to write concisely  good analytical skills  good organisational skills  good oral and written communication  interested in current affairs skills  able to work under pressure  aptitude for working with computers

To become a public relations officer students usually have to complete a TAFE qualification in public relations, or a degree with a major in public relations. There are many courses offered at both TAFE and university level that can prepare students for a career in public relations. Public relations is often offered as a major within a course, for example, within a Bachelor of Arts. Other times, it is a specialised public relations degree course such as offered at the following institutions:
