It wasn't Bob Hope, but one of my few fond memories from commanding PONCHATOULA was hosting a USO show on PONCH. They were putting on a show for the VINSON battlegroup in 83 on the North Arabian Sea beat. I was out on the far fringe of the group with a couple destroyers. The BG commander wanted to send the show out but the tin cans didn't have anyplace to berth them. I volunteered Hotel PONCH; two man staterooms and unlimited hot water. They took us up and were helo'ed out, did the shows for the destroyers, came to us, did a short show and got a great rest. I entertained the band leader and singer after the show. Seems to me there were a couple bottles of scotch involved. Great to see the Hope video. I always watched them when I was a kid. M/
This has been around a few times, always worth the look.
At the end, a Vet calls Bob Hope a Saint, and I agree! I volunteered for a lot of Stupid stuff, however I hit the lottery when Bob visited us in Nam, December 1965. I volunteered to carry a wounded soldier to the front of the stage, so that he could see the show. As I turned around to leave for the rear, I was told to sit behind my patient, because I was to carry him back to the ambulance after the show. LOTTERY!!! I had a Polaroid, black & white of course, and got some Great pictures. I even got Joey Heatherton, Miss America, and Bob Hope to autograph them for me. LOTTERY! The show was GREAT, so sit back and enjoy this Saint at work! By the way, NO B.S. about the Tears!!! Got em now. http://biggeekdad.com/2011/02/bob-hope-christmas/
