GENERAL INFORMATION *Please read all instructions and the website carefully before submitting questions to the department.*
√ More information will be posted to the website in June. This is a introductory Welcome and guide. Please wait to send questions until you read the information in June unless your question is on admission and registration.
√ Introductions & Orientation to the program are Wednesday Aug 26, 0800 International Hall 201A (in N 303) √ Textbooks are listed at the SSU Bookstore website. You are not required to buy them from the SSU Bookstore. When shopping for books be certain to match the ISBN number for the correct book identification. The textbook search function is located at: http://sonoma.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TBWi zardView?catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=27551 √ Many students ask if they can buy older editions. That is your choice but textbooks do change and you are responsible for the reading assigned. √ Registration: Please register sooner than later. You do not pay fees when you register. Do not worry we have a spot for you for nursing courses and will sort out lab groups when we meet together. When you register the classes in nursing are NURS 301 and NURS 303. They each have an accompanying clinical lab section. √ Class schedule for Fall: o N 301 Monday & Wednesday 11:00-1:30 lecture o N 301/N303 Clinical days are Thursday & Friday. o N 301 is from 0630-1500 and N 303 is form 0630-1630. o N 303 Monday & Wednesday 8:00-9:50 AM lecture o N 301/303 Thursday/Friday Clinical Lab: First 3 weeks on campus in skills lab and o Next 10 weeks in respective acute care agencies Page 2 of 4 SSU Nursing Welcome Letter MENTORSHIP SOCIAL
√ The current students are excited to meet you! A mentor social will be scheduled. Stay tuned for date and time. √ Each of you will be assigned an upper class mate as a mentor √ Students have found this an invaluable and long lasting relationship √ Get help form the day of admission and develop a life long colleague √ Your classmates are excited to meet you all.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (Submit to Certified Background Check). This information will be posted on the nursing department website in June 2015. All due by 7/1 no exceptions.
√ Student Health Evaluation √ Influenza Declination form (the 2015 flu shot will be available on or about October 1, 2015. Wait on this form until October) √ Immunizations as listed on the health form √ Back ground check & Drug screening √ Malpractice Insurance is provided by CSU √ CPR (see requirements below) √ Transcripts for pending courses (these come to the dept) √ CNA Certificate
UNIFORM AND SUPPLIES
√ The uniform policy is in the Student Handbook √ The supplies required for clinical are listed in the student handbook at www.sonoma.edu/nursing √ The hospital experience are two back to back days (Thursdays & Fridays) and two uniforms are easier than laundry in between long shifts √ A white lab coat is required in all campus lab experiences √ Uniform patches are purchased from the department at 5.00 dollars each (3 are recommended) √ SSU Nursing picture ID badges are required at all clinical and skills lab experiences. You will have an appointment in the Department for these the first week of school. The faculty will notify you of these appointments. √ You must have a Basic Life Support—Health Care Provider Card (2-person and infant rescue). √ This is updated and uploaded annually by July 1. √ CPR is offered throughout the county
FINANCIAL INFORMATION
√ We offer the following information as a financial estimate for the first semester. Some items/books are used throughout the program. We make every effort to keep costs at a minimum while maintaining a quality education √ Books = 550.00 (booklists are located on bookstore website. Books may be purchased anywhere but do use ISBN numbers when ordering to assure the correct edition of the text.) All payments below are due 7/1. √ ATI = 350.00 (per semester) √ Uniform(s) = 60.00 √ Supplies = 100.00-200.00 √ Skills Kit = 125.00 √ Certified background = $107.00 TIME COMMITMENT
√ The first semester of the program includes two courses: N301, N303 for a total of 15 academic units. √ You should plan to spend 15-20 hours each week outside of class to complete readings and other assignments. √ Between class time, preparation and reading, students spend 40 hours each week to be successful in the program. √ We recommend waiting to complete any needed GE until after this semester √ We realize that many students must work while attending nursing school. LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM “MOODLE” & SEAWOLF ID
√ All communication via email will be either through Moodle or Seawolf email. Not your personal email account. This is for security purposes and university policy. √ There are Moodle tutorials available on the main Moodle website website. These are accessible without a SSU user ID or Password. It is highly encouraged that you view these tutorials before your classes begin in the fall. √ Click on the following link to find the tutorials: www.moodle.org √ You can log on for a demo as a student under the Moodle Features Demo. This will prepare you for learning to navigate Moodle. √ Most of your courses in the program will be a hybrid of Moodle and face to face. The specific N 301 and N 303 Moodle course sites will not be available until few days before the start of the semester. These are for current and registered students only. The course faculty will notify you via your Seawolf email account when the courses are available for your review and use. √ Get to know Moodle!
