Your assignment in the computer lab is to pick a choral song, like something we would work on in class. In order to pick a song, you need to listen to at least 10 different songs, which you need to list on the next page. For each song, list the title and composer or arranger, and if there is a separate lyricist or poet. You must also list the voicing: SAB, three-part mixed, two-part, or unison- you may not use SATB or more parts. The songs you do not chose you must give a musical reason why you did not pick it- for example, “I didn’t like the lyrics” or “it’s in minor and I didn’t like how it sounded.” You will NOT receive full credit if you don’t list musical reasons (“it’s not good” is not enough! Tell me WHY it’s not good). Here are some things you can talk about in regards to why or why not you liked a song:
- Rhythm/ Meter/ Beat: is it interesting and/or different? Or does it have a Driving rhythm like a rock song?
- Tonality: Major (happy) or minor (sad)
- Lyrics: do the words come from some other source, like a poem? Are they age appropriate (not to childish/ not to boring)
- Range: does the song have notes that are too high or too low for our choirs to sing?
- Genre: is it a spiritual, American folk song, song for another country, pop song, classical, etc.
- Dynamics: good use of dynamics (uses loud and soft to make the song more interesting).
To listen to music:
1. Go to www.jwpepper.com
2. On the silver bar at the top highlight “choral” and a box will appear: choose either “all school choir” “SAB and three-part” or “unison and two-part”. Your song must be either SAB, three-part mixed, two-part, or unison.
3. Click on links and start listening =)
You may also use Choral Catalogues that I have- you need to ask for these, and they have less songs then the website above.
In order to earn an “a” on this project, you must do the following: 1. Listen to at least 10 different songs.
2. Record the songs you listen to: title, composer, arranger, and poet or lyricist (if there is one).
3. For each song, tell why /why not you liked it or didn’t in MUSICAL TERMS (I’ve said that three times now… that must mean it’s important).
4. Turn in a Neat, clean, well organized and well thought out paper by the due date which is ______. (Also, we are in the computer lab- I would prefer a typed paper but it is not required).
EXAMPLE: (what an A looks like)
Title: “ Don’t Stop Believin’” from Glee

Composer/ Arranger: Arr. Rodger Emmerson
Voicing: SAB
Why we did or did not like the song:
We picked “Don’t Stop Believin’” from Glee because it showcases a pop song, it has a challenging range, great driving rhythm, good dynamics, repetitive parts that make it easy to learn, and fun lyrics.
