The family oriented, totally volunteer run event 25 showcases the city’s character and close connection with the water; 26 and 27 28 Whereas, the festival’s origins date back to the 1930s, when 29 sailboat racing on the Beaufort River became popular. Members of 30 the community later decided to create an event that would 31 celebrate Beaufort’s renowned Southern hospitality and culturally 32 diverse island lifestyle; and 33 34 Whereas, as a result, the first official Beaufort Water Festival was 35 established in 1956 and has grown to attract more than one 36 hundred thousand visitors annually to downtown Beaufort and the 37 surrounding areas; and 38 39 Whereas, this year’s edition of the festival, July 1524, 2011, 40 includes golf and fishing tournaments; an arts and crafts market; 41 live entertainment in Waterfront Park, featuring music from the 42 varied genres of Motown, country, shag, and others; and family

[4325] 2 1 entertainment, including Children’s Day, Talent Night, the 2 Lowcountry Supper, and the ever popular Parris Island Marine 3 Band and the Grand Parade of Boats; and 4 5 Whereas, leading the festival fleet is Commodore Bob Bible, with 6 the support of First Lady Colleen Bible and Bob’s 2011 7 coordinators, John Gentry, Jack Little, Bernie Amaya, Dan 8 Thompson, Brandy Gray, Donna Patrick, Chris Canaday, Bill 9 DaMude, Adam Aimar, and Nicky Fowlkes. Their outstanding 10 leadership of the hundreds of volunteers working under their aegis 11 keeps everything about the festival flowing in shipshape fashion; 12 and 13 14 Whereas, after bills are paid, most of the money the Beaufort 15 Water Festival brings in goes back into the community. The 16 festival donates to the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Beaufort Business 17 and Professional Women’s Club, Zonta Club of Beaufort, and 18 other groups who volunteer to help during the festival. It also 19 sponsors a $2,500 scholarship every year for a student at the 20 University of South Carolina Beaufort; and 21 22 Whereas, the community’s continuous dedication to providing 23 visitors and residents quality entertainment has made the event one 24 of the most popular volunteer festivals on the Southeastern coast. 25 The House of Representatives commends the people of Beaufort 26 for bringing the Beaufort Water Festival to the Palmetto State and 27 encourages all South Carolinians to patronize and enjoy its 28 offerings. Now, therefore, 29 30 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 31 32 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 33 by this resolution, celebrate the fiftysixth annual Beaufort Water 34 Festival, to be held Friday, July 15, 2011, through Sunday, July 24, 35 2011, encourage all South Carolinians to attend and enjoy this 36 family friendly event, and wish its organizers every success. 37 38 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 39 Commodore Bob Bible for the Beaufort Water Festival. 40 XX 41
