To Market, To Market

Objective: The students will recognize the rhythm and rhyme of poetry makes it often used in songs and literature. The Students will recognize and generate rhyming words.

ALCOS: 1:6 Recognize a variety of narrative text forms, including fairy tales, adventure stories, and poetry. 1:1 Demonstrate phonemic awareness, including isolating, deleting, and adding phonemes; using onsets and rimes; and identifying initial, medial, and final sounds in one-syllable words. 1:7 Identify visual arts professions within a community.

Materials “To Market, To Market” by Anne Miranda “To Market, To Market” Classic Mother Goose Poem “To Market, To Market” by The Re-Bops Rhyming Words Handout (teacher made) To Market Story Handout (teacher made) To Market Story Example (teacher made) I-pod and Portable Speakers Construction Paper Pencils Crayons

Procedure: 1. The teacher will assemble the students for group time. The Teacher will read the classic Mother Goose poem “To Market, To Market.” She will point out the lines, which rhyme. She will also reread the poem to point out the rhythm of the poem. The class will then reread the poem together. The teacher will explain that because of the rhythm and rhyme of poetry it is used often for songs and books. 2. The teacher will play a song version of the poem. The teacher will point out that many songs especially rap songs are poetry. The teacher will tell the students to listen for rhymes next time they here music. 3. The teacher will tell the students that the poem, “To Market, To Market”, has also been adapted to a book by Anne Miranda. The teacher will explain that adapt means to change to use it in a different way. The teacher will tell the students to listen for the rhyme in the story. The teacher will also point out the illustrator, Janet Stevens. The teacher will read the book, “To Market, To Market” by Anne Miranda. 4. The teacher will ask the students to share any thoughts or feelings they had about the book. The teacher will ask the students to compare the book and the poem and tell how they were the same or different. 5. The teacher will explain that the students are going to make their own book based on the Mother Goose poem. The teacher will show the students the “To Market” story handout and show the students how they are going to cut it out and fold it. The teacher will read the lines from the book and will give an example of how the students are going to make their own funny book. The teacher will tell the students that they can be as creative as possible but that the end of their sentences need to rhyme. The teacher will show the students the rhyming words handout and will explain that they can use these to help find rhymes but they don’t have to. The teacher will explain that after they have written their story they can illustrate it. The teacher will also show the students how the cover will be made out of construction paper. 6. The students will return to their desks and the teacher will pass out supplies. The students will write their “To Market” books and the teacher will walk around and provide assistance where necessary. The teacher will help the students assemble their books as they finish.

Extension 1. After everyone is finished creating their books the teacher will set up an author’s chair at the front of the group time rug. Any student who wants to read their book to the class can have the opportunity to share. The teacher will emphasize the importance of listening politely while someone else talks or reads.
