Island of the Blue Dolphins WYNN Lesson Plan

Description: Using WYNN 5.1 the teacher will download Island of the Blue Dolphins from Bookshare.org. The teacher will then use the WYNN Web access feature to open the study guide Web site for the book. Using WYNN’s Highlight and Extract features, the teacher will extract the study questions of her choice. The teacher will then put the questions into a Voice or Text Note. The document will be saved. The students will read the book and answer the questions. The teacher will also extract vocabulary words that the students will be expected to learn.

Goals: 1. To develop the joy of reading. 2. To increase the ability to read with understanding. 3. To increase the student’s vocabulary level.

Objectives: 1. To read Island of the Blue Dolphins. 2. To develop reading comprehension skills. 3. To develop vocabulary skills.

Procedure: 1. Save the book into WYNN 5.1 either by downloading or scanning. 2. Then using the WYNN 5.1 Web access feature, open a study guide Web site for the book. 3. Using the Highlight pens, highlight any questions that you want to use in the book. 4. Using the Extract feature on the Web Toolbar, extract by color into a new WYNN document. This will enable you to refer to the questions without going back to the Web site. 5. Using the Study Skills Toolbar, make either a note or voice note to place study guide questions into the book. For a note, copy and paste the question in the open note box.

In the scanned version, use the List feature on the Pink Study Skills Toolbar to create a new document for vocabulary. In the online version, use Extract by color into a new WYNN document. 8. Have students use the Dictionary feature to copy and paste definitions. 9. Print a study guide from the Q&As. Materials/Resources: Computer with WYNN 5.1, access to Bookshare.org or a WYNN scanned version of Island of the Blue Dolphins, access to the study guide for the book.

Assessment/Evaluation: Students will meet the success standard the teacher has established for answering the study questions and using the vocabulary.
