Prince with the 28 assistance of Robert H. Burns, a Wake Forest classmate and 29 member of the Whiteville Civitan Club, the Loris Civitan Club 30 was the first civic club introduced to Loris; and 31 32 Whereas, in 1950, the Loris Civitans established a hospital in Loris 33 through the visionary leadership of E. E. Prince and S. F. Portland 34 also of the Loris Civitans, after requesting that the South Carolina 35 Legislature grant Loris status as a special purpose district in 1946, 36 which allowed fund raising for the hospital and provided a board 37 appointed by the Governor for the town’s hospital; and 38 39 Whereas, the Loris Civitans have continued their tradition of care 40 for their community with a wide variety of projects throughout its 41 seventy years, including plans that began in 2003 to relocate the

[701] 2 1 city’s historic train depot to a central downtown area and to restore 2 it as a museum, which they have seen to completion; and 3 4 Whereas, on April 14, 2009, the members of the Loris Civitan 5 Club will celebrate the rich heritage of their seventyyear history 6 with friends and honored guests at the First Presbyterian Church of 7 Loris; and 8 9 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to honor 10 the Loris Civitans and to commemorate with them seventy years of 11 outstanding service to Horry County. Now, therefore, 12 13 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 14 concurring: 15 16 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 17 resolution, recognize and commend the Loris Civitan Club of 18 Horry County for service to the citizens of the community and 19 congratulate the members upon the occasion of their seventieth 20 anniversary. 21 22 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 23 the Loris Civitan Club. 24 XX 25
