Topics include electricity, magnetism, light and modern physics. This course is for students in those liberal arts and pre-professional courses not requiring physics with calculus (if you plan to major in biology, engineering, computer science, chemistry or physics, check with counseling to be sure you’re in the right course). PREREQUISITES: Physics 125, with a grade of C or better REQUIRED TEXTS: 1. REQUIRED SUPPLIES: Ruler, protractor, calculator, red, blue pencil, print card (for downloads) TRANSFER APPLICABILITY: CSU General Education; IGETC UC Transfer Course List: Physics (PHYS) 180A,B, 121A,B ; 125, 126; and 195,196,197 combined: maximum credit, one series (per catalog) deduct credit for duplication of topics. METHODS OF EVALUATION Celebrations of Knowledge (aka exams) 60%: There will be 5 celebrations given throughout the semester (see topic outline for tentative dates). These will have a multiple choice section, so bring a Scantron. The chapters for each celebration are given, but to the extent that learning the new material is based upon comprehension of older material, all celebrations are cumulative. They are closed-book, but you may bring a sheet of paper (both sides) on which you may write formulas and notes. NO GRAPHS, DRAWINGS OR XEROXED MATERIAL. I will drop the lowest grade for celebrations # 1-4. Celebration #5 (last day of class) cannot be dropped. There are no exam makeups, since you can use a missed exam as your lowest grade. Labs 20%: Labs are held in the 2nd half of the class period. The tentative lab schedule is below. You are responsible for downloading labs from my website unless I hand them out. You have to do this some other place than in the laboratory. You, personally, must have a copy of the lab in your possession before you can start working on the lab. Some labs will have a prelab. In this case, the prelab must be turned in at the start that day’s class, at 8:00 am. If you are not ready to start the lab with the rest of the class for any reason (late arrival, no prelab, no lab) you risk not being able to do the lab, or having to work alone, depending the equipment available. You just can’t join some group that has already started; that would be unfair to all concerned. If do not hand in the prelab at the start of class, you cannot participate in the

1 lab. I will not accept a prelab writeup if I see you working on it during the class, even if the lab experiment has not yet started. I will drop the lowest lab. There are no make-up labs. Webassign: 10% (See quick-start guide below) Reading quizzes and problem sets will be assigned over the Internet, using the program Webassign. Problem sets are a mix of multiple-choice (limited submissions) and end of chapter problems (unlimited submissions). The reading quizzes are multiple choice and are one-shot deals, based on the reading assignment for the day as shown on the syllabus. You will have to purchase a subscription online with a credit card. The cost is $39.95($57.20 with ebook). To purchase a subscription, go to the Webassign log-in page https://www.webassign.net and enter the CLASS KEY - MIRAMAR 8679 8482. Once you have logged in, you can enter yourself in the class. There is a 10-day grace period during which you can log on and do assignments without paying. Eventually you will have to pay with a credit card. If you do not have access to a credit card, please see me as soon as possible. Workbook Exercises 10%: See schedule for problems and due dates. PARTICIPATION: Each person will receive 5 index cards marked A-E. Each time you don’t vote on class questions, you will lose 0.25 points from your final grade (no penalty for wrong answer). If you are not present when I call roll, you will be marked as late. After the second time, you will lose 0.25 points from your final grade for each late arrival. LATE WORK POLICY: I do not accept late labs Webassign has a cut-off date, after which it will not accept submissions. Don’t wait until the last minute, because your computer will sense your state of panic and crash. CELL PHONE/TABLET/LAPTOP: These items should be used for classwork only. Cell phones should be silenced. Please be courteous. Fine Print Stuff:  It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer attending.  It is the instructor’s discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline, (see below for date) due to excessive absences. I define excessive absences as more than 3.  Students who remain enrolled in a class beyond the published withdrawal deadline, as stated in the class schedule, will receive an evaluative letter grade in this class.  The final grade in this class will be affected by active participation, including attendance, due to the in-class activities and laboratory work.  If you have a disability and need academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible.  Academic Dishonesty: At the instructor’s discretion, you can receive a zero for the assignment, a failing grade for the class and be reported to the administration for further sanctions.  Please contact me before withdrawing. There may be options that allow you to remain enrolled. Excused Absences: Military obligations, religious holidays for which work is not permitted, and illness/injury with doctor’s note. Enrolling in Class Your instructor can enroll you in class, or can require you to enroll yourself with a class key. INSTRUCTOR ENROLLMENT If your instructor enrolled you in class, log in to WebAssign with the username, institution code, and password provided by your instructor (see Logging In). SELF-ENROLLMENT If your instructor gave you a class key — like myschool 1234 5678 — you must enter the class key to enroll yourself in the class. A class key is not the same as an access code (see Purchasing WebAssign Access). 1 Go to www.webassign.net. 2 Click Have a class key? 3 Enter the class key your instructor gave you, and click Submit. 4 If the correct class and section is listed, click Yes, this is my class. 5 Select either I already have a WebAssign account or I need to create a WebAssign account and enter the requested information. Logging In Your login information consists of your username, institution code, and password. To log in to WebAssign, go to www.webassign.net or to the Web address provided by your instructor. • To change your password, click My Options in the upper right corner. • If you are enrolled in more than one class, select a class from the My Classes menu. Purchasing WebAssign Access If you are required to pay for WebAssign access to a class, you can: • Purchase access online with a credit card or with a check and a valid PayPal account. • Use a WebAssign access code card if it is included with your new textbook. • Purchase WebAssign access code cards at many campus bookstores. You are granted access to your class without payment during a 14-day grace period from the class start date. PURCHASING ACCESS ONLINE 1 Log in to WebAssign and select your class. 2 Select purchase access online and click Continue. 3 Select the classes and options you want to purchase. 4 Click Checkout. 5 Review the items in your cart, confirm any

5 license agreements, and click Continue. 6 Provide the requested information and click Review Order and Continue. 7 Review the displayed information and click Pay Now. 8 Click Return to WebAssign. 9 Click Finish. ENTERING ACCESS CODES Important: To confirm that your access code card prefix is valid for your class before you open it, or to look up the access code card prefix you need for your class, go to www.webassign.net/user_support/student/ cards.html. 1 Log in to WebAssign and select your class. 2 Select enter an access code. 3 Select your access code prefix from the Choose your access code prefix list. 4 Enter your access code in the boxes and click Continue. Viewing Your Assignments Your current assignments are listed on the Home page for each class. To see more details about your assignments, or to see past assignments, click My Assignments.

Working on Assignments 1 From your Home page or My Assignments page for a class, click the name of the assignment you want to work on. 2 Answer the assignment questions. See Answering Questions. 3 Optionally, if enabled by your instructor, you can click Save All Work so you can continue working on the assignment later. Your saved work is not scored. 4 Submit your answers. If enabled by your instructor, you will see or to show you which questions you answered correctly and which ones you missed. 5 If enabled by your instructor, submit new answers for any questions you missed. Important: Submit all of your answers before the due date and time displayed at the top of the assignment. Answering Questions WebAssign supports many different question types. Keep the following in mind as you answer questions in WebAssign: • Numbers or words that are displayed in red type are randomized and might be different for your classmates. • Questions displaying the icon require you to specify the correct number of significant figures in your answer. • Some questions display a palette or open a

6 new window for you to specify your answer. For more information about answering questions, see “Answering Questions” in the Student Online Help. Technical Support If you cannot log in or if your class is not displayed after you log in, confirm the following information with your instructor before contacting WebAssign: • If your instructor created an account for you, do you have the correct username, institution code, and password? • If your instructor did not create an account for you, do you have the correct class key?
