Y3 Homophones Objective Guidance Teaching Sequence Homophones and near- Words that sound the same but are homophones spelt differently and have a different Investigate meaning Lesson 1 Children to do an open sort with the words from the list-they may chose to do words with an apostrophe/those without, the number of syllables etc…

Discuss work. Children to compare with a partner or small group and share their sorting criteria. Make a list of sorts on the Word Wall.

Lesson 2 Do a closed sort with the headings-homophones/near homophones, not homophones Within the homophones/near homophones list, ask the children to pair up/put together the words that are homophones/near homophones e.g. here, hear. (If necessary, recap what we mean by homophones. Record it with a couple of examples on the Word Wall.) Challenge

Lesson 3/Lesson 4

Children to work in pairs and split the list of homophones between them. Each child looks up the meaning of their words and puts it in a sentence on a strip of paper. They need to either highlight their homophone or write it in a coloured pen or pencil. Y3 Homophones Each child shares their sentences with their partner. Then, each pair joins with another pair and shares their sentences. Do they agree on the correct meaning of the words and have they used them appropriately? If so, they can start to display them on the Word Wall together with the same homophone. Discuss the range of sentences as a whole class.
