Dear Mr. [Ms./Prof./etc],

The North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) is a not-for-profit organization which unites young professionals who believe in nuclear science and technology and are working together throughout North America to share their passion for a field that is alive and kicking.

In support of our desire to communicate the benefits of nuclear power to the general public, we would like to invite your school to participate in our Essay Contest. Local NAYGN members will visit your school, give a presentation to 9th-12th graders on the topic and rules of the contest, and encourage them to participate.

The essay prompt for this year is: Research energy sources and climate change. Propose an informed energy solution that limits climate change, allows developed countries to maintain their standard of living, and can provide reliable electricity to the 1.2 billion people currently without access to power. Proposed energy solution should consider the environmental and practical benefits and consequences of baseload (e.g. nuclear, fossil, hydro) versus intermittent (e.g. wind or solar) sources.

The essays are due by March 3, 2017. Winners will be selected in May 2017. Prizes are as follows: First place – laptop (Lenovo Yoga 900 or comparable), Second place – Chromebook. In addition, all top 3 finalists will receive science books, the board game Power Grid, and a copy of the documentary Pandora’s Promise.

Local NAYGN members would love the opportunity to discuss nuclear science at your school. In addition, NAYGN members can discuss careers in engineering or the basics of energy to better fit your curriculum. Consider the following dates:

National Nuclear Science Week: October 17-21, 2016 Engineers Week: February 19-25, 2017

Please visit our website at http://naygn.org/committees/public-information/student-education/ for more information about this contest and about NAYGN.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
