THE LORD’S SUPPER (Page 2 in Song Book)

THE THANKSGIVING Clergy: The Lord be with you! People: And also with you! Clergy: Lift up your hearts! People: We lift them up to the Lord! Clergy: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God! People: It is right to give God thanks and praise! Clergy: Holy God, it is right that we should always and everywhere give You thanks and praise. Only You are God. You created all things and called them good. You made us in your own image. People: Even when we rebelled against Your love, You did not desert us. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our God and King, and spoke to us through Your prophets. Clergy: Therefore, we join the entire company of heaven and all Your people now on earth in this song, worshiping and glorifying you:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD, GOD OF POWER AND MIGHT. HEAVEN AND EARTH ARE FILLED WITH YOUR GLORY. HOSANNA, HOSANNA ON HIGH. BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD. HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST, HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST. HOSANNA, HOSANNA ON HIGH.

Clergy: We thank you, 0 God, that You loved the world so much You sent Your only Son to be our Savior. The Lord of all life came to live among us. He healed and taught, ate with sinners, and won for You a new people by water and spirit.

We saw His glory. Yet He humbled Himself in obedience to your will, freely accepting death on a cross. By dying, He freed us from unending death; by rising from the dead, He gave us eternal life.

On the night in which He gave Himself up for us, the Lord Jesus took bread. After giving thanks, He broke the bread, gave it to His disciples and said: "Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you.”

When the supper was over He took the cup. Again He returned thanks to you, gave the cup to His disciples, and said: "Drink from this all of you. This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you and many, for the forgiveness of sins."

Let us also remember that the risen Lord met two weary and discouraged followers while they were on their walk to Emmaus.. That He shared the scriptures with them concerning the Son of God and their hearts burned. But they did not recognize Him until they sat down to supper and He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and their eyes were opened. Amen.

Let us proclaim together the mystery of our faith!

CHRIST HAS DIED, ALLELUIA. CHRIST IS RISEN. ALLELUIA. CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN. ALLELUIA. ALLELUIA. (REPEAT) Clergy: We remember and proclaim, Our God, what your Son has done for us in His life and death, in His resurrection and ascension. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, in union with Christ's offering for us, as a reasonable and holy surrender of ourselves. Send the power of your Holy Spirit on us, gathered here out of love for you, and on these gifts.

Help us now in the breaking of this bread and the drinking from this cup experience the presence of Christ who gave His body and blood for us all. Make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in service to all the world.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all glory and honor is yours, our God and Creator. Amen.

ANOINTING SERVICE (Page 8 in the Song Book) Clergy (Community Spiritual Director): The practice of anointing with perfumed oil was common among the Hebrews. The act of anointing was significant of consecration to a holy or sacred use. It was used to set people or objects apart for God’s service. Priests and kings in particular were installed in their offices by anointing. The coronation was the political act of establishing the king as ruler of Israel; the anointing was the religious act of making the king God’s representative to the people of Israel. A king was always anointed by a priest or prophet. The special anointing oil was a mixture of olive oil, myrrh and other expensive spices. It was poured over the king’s head to symbolize the presence and power of the Holy Spirit of God in his life. This anointing ceremony was to remind the king of his great responsibility to lead his people by God’s wisdom and not his own.

The authority for conducting this Emmaus Weekend is conferred upon the Illinois Heartland Community Board of Directors by the Upper Room. The anointing service is symbolic of that authority being passed to the Team by the Board.

BLESSING OF THE OIL Clergy: The Lord be with you! People: And also with you! Clergy: Let us pray. Eternal God, you are a God that equips us for every ministry. It is your grace that informs us and your Spirit that empowers us. And so, on this special occasion of anointing Illinois Heartland Walk to Emmaus Team No. _____, we ask you to pour out your Holy Spirit on this gift of oil and on those who will receive it, to anoint them with your rightness and clothe them with your mercy, so that in the task of serving on this team they may speak your words of love and lead others, by example, into the life that leads to eternity. Let this oil be the touch of your hand. We ask these and all blessings in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. People: Amen
