VOLUNTEER DOOR TO DOOR LOTTERY COLLECTORS
This is an area where we have been struggling for many years with our Lottery membership. While we have endeavoured to move players over to a more efficient, cost effective method of collection, there is a specific area of our membership who are not prepared to pay their Lottery fees in any other way than by having them collected on the doorstep.
Rounds vary in size both numerically and geographically; they also vary in their regularity weekly / fortnightly / monthly.
Any volunteer wishing to take on one of these roles needs to be numerical, capable of handling cash of varying amounts, be methodical and accurate in the recording of data and confident going door to door collecting cash.
This role also requires someone who is willing to operate outside of normal working hours as it is more likely that collections can be made during the evenings or at weekends.
The benefits to the volunteer are that they can keep 10% of the total collected and gain commission on any new memberships signed.
A basic overview of the Lottery mechanics will be given to give the volunteer a knowledge of how the Lottery operates to help in promotion when talking to the public.
LOTTERY VOLUNTEERS
To assist in promoting the East Cheshire Hospice Lottery throughout our catchment area at events such as: - Farmers Markets - Wedding Fayres - Garden Festivals - Summer Fetes and Village Shows - Treacle Market - Sundry events arranged by FR
To assist the Lottery Officer to generate an interest in the Hospice Lottery and acquire new Hospice Lottery players - by the distribution of literature - talking to the general public o telling of the importance of the Lottery o explaining how the Lottery supports the Hospice funds - outlining the ‘mechanics’ of the Lottery o prize breakdown o frequency of draw o how to enter o methods of payment o distribution of prizes - take new Lottery memberships, assist with the completion of the Lottery application form or complete the live process online (when the facility become available) - promote the sale of single entry Lottery tickets (when an individual does not want a full Lottery entry – these sales do not apply at all events)
To promote the Lottery Wedding Favours at appropriate events, in addition to being able to outline the Lottery aspects given above: - distribute Wedding Favour literature - outline the mechanics of the Wedding Favour - show examples of Wedding Favour and explain the ‘customisation’ process
At all Lottery events / promotions: - highlight any specific special Lottery promotions - promote Lottery associated products single ticket entry, gift vouchers etc. - promote other associated FR events (Lottery will liaise with FR and advise on this aspect) - sell (where applicable) FR promotional goods (items need to be logged and any income kept separate from any Lottery sales) - invite people to donate to Hospice funds
This is just a general outline of requirements for Lottery specific events designed primarily to increase an awareness of the Lottery and its importance in the overall fundraising activity of the Hospice.
These events can be on any day of the week but, mostly, take place over the weekend. Support can be given initially in the set up of stalls and how to display items but, preferably, this will be the responsibility of the volunteer. All the requisite items will be prepared prior to the event and will be collected from the Hospice by the volunteer. Unless the gazebo is required for an outdoor event, there are no large items to handle and are usually accommodated in a wheeled trolley.
There will be a degree of cash handling required in the taking of single ticket Lottery payments, cheques and card details for new Lottery memberships. In addition there will a requirement to accurately take details of names, addresses and bank details and ensuring that Lottery applications are completed correctly and signed. Eventually the volunteer will require a level of IT ability as it is intended that applications will be processed ‘live’ online at events using a tablet.
Full instruction will be given to volunteers on the workings of the Lottery and the requirements of new applications to fully comply with Gambling Commission regulations. Initially volunteers would be accompanied at events and would only go ‘solo’ once it was agreed that the volunteer is capable of handling various events.
