Mid-Arizona Shetland Sheepdog Rescue Adoption Process

Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescue sheltie. Adopting a sheltie from Rescue represents a potentially enjoyable, effective, and responsible source for a loving sheltie. Our goal is to place a sheltie in your household that will make you and the sheltie happy. To that end, we ask that you complete an application and note your requirements, expectations, and family situation. With this information we can match you with the right dog. Please give your requirements some thought as we probably will not contact you about dogs that do not meet your requirements. The address to send the application is listed at the end of the application.

We regularly get shelties from a variety of sources including the pound and owner turn-ins. We usually have dogs available for adoption. Dogs adopted from our program will be evaluated for temperament and health while living in a foster home. Dogs received in rescue are ensured they are current on shots, spayed or neutered if that procedure has not been performed on the dog, and vet checked.

Yes we are a non-profit organization and have expenses, so an adoption fee is required. This fee is used to pay expenses (mostly veterinary) pertaining to our rescues. We are a volunteer organization and have negligible administrative expenses.

Upon receipt of your application we will match it against available dogs in our program to determine if we have any suitable shelties for your household. If a sheltie is available that meets your needs, and we feel will be a good fit with your household, we will discuss the sheltie with you. If you are interested in the sheltie we will arrange to bring the sheltie to your home and meet any other household members and pets. If after seeing the sheltie you and our representative believe that the sheltie is a good fit, you will sign an adoption contract and the sheltie will be left at your house. We will perform some follow-up with you to ensure that any initial questions are answered and the adoption is going well.

Our adoption contract basically specifies that you will exercise responsible care over your sheltie. While most of our adopters are very happy with their rescues, if you are not happy with your sheltie you are required to return the sheltie to us. We will refund the adoption fee if returned the sheltie is returned within a reasonable amount of time.

Please note that because of the nature of sheltie rescue there is often the need to quickly place shelties that have been evaluated and ready for placement. Failure to do so places shelties not in the program at risk. As a result, we often can’t give applicants as long to respond to our calls or emails as we would like. Accordingly, when we contact you regarding a rescue sheltie please respond quickly.

If you have any questions about our adoption process or the application please call Phyllis Watson at 480-464-1269 or email her at [email protected] better yet contact our group email at [email protected] where any one of our representatives can get back to you.

We are also always looking for people interested in serving as foster homes for displaced shelties. This represents a way for you to help rescue shelties without a long-term commitment. If you would like more information about possibly serving as a foster home please contact the group email account at [email protected] where a representative is available and will get back to you at our earliest convince.
