Matthew 8:2 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

2. Lordship Is Placing God First In Your Life.

A. Scripture tells us to put God first:

Matthew 22:36 - 38 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and great commandment.

23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ 24“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

John 21:15-23 15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” 20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” 23Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Luke 6:46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

Chuck Colson said, “The greatest challenge facing the church today is to reassert the Lordship of Christ.”

A Recent Gallop Poll revealed:

In recent years, religious interest in America is growing at an unprecedented rate while at the same time immoral behavior in on a rampage. It also revealed that there is little difference in those who go to church and those who do not.

Why? - Because we as believers have not understood nor submitted to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The poll also found that most Americans stated that religion is a personal matter having little effect on the way they lead their life.

In other words: They come to church on Sunday, listen to the music, open their Bible (if they brought it), halfheartedly listen to the message, take a few notes, close their Bible, walk to the parking lot, get in their car, and basically as a Christian camellian leave their values, principles, and Biblical truths at the church property and basically fall into the masses of society and come back the next Sunday and submit to the Lordship of Christ for a day! Etc, etc.

Page 2 Speaking of Church Members: (an article in Capital Voice) 10% have forgot they are church members. 20% cannot be found. 25% never attend church. 30% never pray 40% never read the Bible 50% never give to the church. 75% never attend a midweek service. 80% never assume a responsibility or ministry within the church. 98% never have won one person to Christ Yet 100% think they will go to heaven!

For this Lordship series, I commit that I will study the Gospels and give you what the Scripture says about Lordship.

If you will commit to listening and obeying the Scripture, your life will be changed.

5 Truths About Lordship

1. Lordship is accepting the sovereignty of God.

A. What does being Sovereign mean? = “one who possesses and exercises supreme authority over an individual or group…acknowledged leader…a controlling influence.”

B. If you study the lives of men and women who have done great exploits for God, you will find that they settled the sovereignty issue before their accomplishments.

C. Quotations:

C. S. Lewis said “In God you come up against something which in every respect is immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that, and therefore know yourself as nothing in comparison, you do not really know God at all.” Page 3

E. Stanley Jones said, “…communism is shakable….capitalism is shakable….democracy is shakable …health is shakable…life is shakable. Every kingdom is shakable except one - the Kingdom of God. It is the one-and-only unshakable kingdom!

D. We must admit that God is Sovereign - that God is in complete control of everything! EXAMPLE = the leper in Matthew 8:

Matthew 8:2 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

2. Lordship Is Placing God First In Your Life.

A. Scripture tells us to put God first:

Matthew 22:36 - 38 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and great commandment.

There were 613 commandments in the law….. (40% positive and 60% negative).

This is the first commandment that a Jewish child must memorize.

“Thou Shall have no other Gods before me.”

B. Great men of God tell us about Lordship:

William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, said, “God has had all of me that there is. There have been others who had greater plans, greater opportunities, and greater potential that I, But from the day that I had a vision of what God could do in MY life, I made up my mind that God would have all of William Booth that there was. Page 4

C. If you do not trust God in all, you do not trust Him at all! He must be first and foremost above everything else in your life!

D. Citizenship requires 100% allegiance. When an immigrant wants to become a citizen of the United States, as part of the ceremony he or she must renounce the citizenship of their previous country. SO IT IS WITH THE KINGDOM - LORDSHIP - OF JESUS CHRIST!

1. Lordship is accepting the sovereignty of God. 2. Lordship Is Placing God First In Your Life. 3. Lordship Is Accepting Responsibility And Accountability.

A. Lordship is accepting what God has given us and doing something with it.

B. Turn to Matthew 25:14 - 30 the story of the talents

1) God has entrusted blessings to us. (v. 14)

14“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.

2) God’s gifts are not equally given. (v. 15)

15And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.

3) People respond differently to what God has given them. (v 16-18)

16Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.

Page 5

4) All of us will be accountable for what we do with what God gave us. (v.19)

19After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

5) All of us will be rewarded for how we developed God’s blessings. (vs. 20-30) 20“So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 24“Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’ 26“But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. 29‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Page 6

6) God never wants back from us what He gave to us in the same amount.

a) Never sit on it! b) He wants it wisely invested and used.

- Two of the men looked at the Master’s expectations as a blessing - One man looked at the Master’s expectations as a burden.

C. Our attitude about the Master’s expectations will determine our responsibility and accountability to what God has given.

1. Lordship is accepting the sovereignty of God. 2. Lordship Is Placing God First In Your Life. 3. Lordship Is Accepting Responsibility And Accountability. 4. Lordship Is Doing The Will Of God.

Matthew 7:21-27 21“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ 24“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Page 7

A. Most Christians are educated way beyond their level of obedience! 1) Knowing deals with learning 2) Showing deals with Lordship

B. The last thing most people need is another Bible Study – they need to put into practice what they already know.

Ask some people if they want is to teach a children’s Sunday School class or study the book of Zephaniah and they declare, “Bring on Zephaniah, Bring on Zephaniah!” If the Pastor studies and teaches it!

C. Jesus declares that if you are really in the Kingdom then your actions will back up your words and if your actions do not back up your words then you’re not in my Kingdom.

Jesus would say: “You may look right and talk right, but if you don’t do right, you’re not in My Kingdom. I’m not your Lord!”

1. Lordship is accepting the sovereignty of God. 2. Lordship Is Placing God First In Your Life. 3. Lordship Is Accepting Responsibility And Accountability. 4. Lordship Is Doing The Will Of God. 5. Lordship Is Personal Obedience Regardless Of The Cost.

A. Page 8

Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” In this Scripture Peter is asked three times by Christ if he loved him. In the discourse, Peter is told of his personal suffering. He then asked Jesus about John. - Jesus responds …”what is that to thee? Follow thou me.”

B. We look around us and try to compare our servitude to Christ to that of others.

C. Get your eyes off others and get your eyes personally on Christ

D. Be personally obedient!

Remember: God Is Either Lord Of All Or Not Your Lord At All.

LORDSHIP IS: 1. Accepting The Sovereignty Of God 2. Placing God First In Your Life 3. Accepting Responsibility And Accountability 4. Doing The Will Of God 5. Personal Obedience Regardless Of The Cost
