Climate Change and Cities

Burhan Gafoor Singapore’s Chief Negotiator of Climate Change (2010-2014) Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore

Synopsis Climate change is a global problem and cities are often the most affected. But are cities contributing to the problem or to the solution? How cities respond to the challenge of climate change will determine the future of our planet. Ambassador Burhan Gafoor’s speech entitled “Climate Change and Cities” will address the link between urbanisation and climate change and also examine the role cities can play to deal with the challenge of climate change.

About the Speaker Ambassador Burhan Gafoor has been dealing with sustainable development issues throughout his career as a diplomat. He was involved in the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and also the Rio+20 in 2012. Since 2010, he was Singapore’s Chief Negotiator for Climate Change and led Singapore’s negotiating team to the UN Climate Conferences in Cancun, Durban, Doha and Warsaw. He was also Ambassador of Singapore to the WTO (2004-2007) and Ambassador to France (2007-2010). He graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) degree in Political Science from the NUS and has a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the JFK School of Government at Harvard University.

BY CAR See above map for location The Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKY CIC) was officially established in September 2012. It is one of the first research centres in the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to focus on the integrated use of technology and design to derive solutions for urban planning, design development and management. The Centre’s mission is to become a thought leader on the critical issues of cities and urbanisation, to provide breakthrough urban solutions, and to better understand the necessary accompanying governance and social frameworks.
