Augustus Reedy, Jr. and Clara Rebecca Mongold

AUGUSTUS REEDY, JR., son of Augustus Reedy, Sr. and his 1st wife Phoebe Ann Tappy, daughter of James M. Tappy, Sr. and Sarah Graves. He was born 10/01/1861, North Mountain, Linville, Rockingham County, Virginia. He died 01/18/1896, North Mountain, Linville, Rockingham County, Virginia. He was married 02/23/1884, ______, Rockingham County, Virginia, to Clara (Carrie) Rebecca Mongold, the daughter of Nathaniel Mongold, Sr. and his third wife Susan Ridenour, the daughter of Conrad Ridenour/ Rittenhour/ Ridenhour/ Ritenour and Margaret "Peggy" Whitehead. Clara Rebecca Mongold was born abt. __/__1862-65 ______, Pendleton County (?)/Hardy County, West Virginia; died 04/09/1946, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. Augustus Reedy, Jr. is buried at the Reedy Family Cemetery, Singers Glen, Rockingham County, Virginia. Clara Rebecca Mongold Reedy Simmers is buried at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.

Biography: His daughter Estella Alberta Reedy said that her father had died on her ninth birthday. He had arrived home and gave her two oranges for her birthday.

Later that evening, he died. In the courthouse records for marriage and birth records indicate that Augustus Reedy was a farmer and an Engineer. He worked on the railroad. He may have had other occupations as well. Oral history also indicates that he was a mailman, milkman, and a Minister. (???) After the death Augustus, Clara was left with seven children to hand and feed. She often talked about the hardships and sacrifices that she and her children had struggled to survive. At this time, if memory serves me right, I believe I was told by Julia and Carrie Reedy that he had been injured on the job, but he didn’t realize how serious his injury was, until it was too late. –John R. Cope

Angus Louis Reedy, John L. Reedy, and Howard W. Reedy, like their father, they all worked on the railroad. A couple years after Augustus Reedy Jr. death, the entire Reedy Family left Broadway Township, Rockingham County, Virginia and moved to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, due to their jobs on the railroad.

When Augustus Reedy, Jr., was married on 02/23/1884, Rockingham County, Virginia, to Clara Rebecca Mongold, he was 22 years old. Clara already had her first child, Angus Louis (Culler) Reedy, who was born on 04/24/1881. Angus Louis Reedy's father was Cornelius (Neil) Cullers. After Augustus Reedy married Clara, he adopts Angus Louis Cullers. Clara Rebecca Mongold Reedy, secondly was married on abt. __/__/1921, ______, ______County, Maryland?, to Harry Simmers, when she was 56 years old.

Augustus Reedy, Jr. and Clara Rebecca Mongold had six children in their union, whereas seven children were complete in this union: (Clara had a total of seven children, with two different fathers for her children)

1. Angus Louis (Cullers) Reedy, born 04/24/1881, Broadway Township, Rockingham County, Virginia, died 11/05/1962, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. (Augustus adopted Clara's child, son of Cornelius (Neil) Cullers and Clara Mongold). He was 1st married abt. __/__1903, ______, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, to Mary Elizabeth Pence, the daughter of _____ Pence, Sr. and ______, born abt. __/__/1886, Broadway Township, Rockingham County, Virginia; died 01/__/1905, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. She and their baby both died of consumption. He was secondly married 05/28/1910, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, to Dolly Bentz Sinn. They both are buried at the buried at the Rest Haven Cemetery Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. (They had eleven children in their union.)

(After the death of Clara Mongold’s father, Nathaniel Mongold, Clara at an early age of fifteen, she was sent work as a servant for the Cullers Family. She is listed as a servant in the 1880 Census, aged seventeen, Hardy County, West Virginia with the Cullers (Color) family. During that period, she had become pregnant with head of household Cornelius Cullers. The family refused to accept the responsibility for her pregnancy and had sent her away.) It is apparent that Clara’s mother, Susan Ridenour aged 44 year in 1880, who could not read, would not have had the resources to help very much. (Note: Earlier census records for 1870, records Clara’s year of birth to be about the year of 1865. Therefore, Clara would have been fifteen years of age, instead of the recorded 1880 census record as being seventeen years of age.

Biography: Daniel Christopher Harter Wolfe was often referred as D. C. H. Wolfe, by his neighbors and friends. No matter what group he was in. He liked to talk and he was always the center of the conversation. He had enjoyed having visitors, friends and neighbors so much, that in summer time, he had tables placed in orchard on his farm, so that they would bring their baskets of food and he would provide his food and they would all have plenty of food and a lively conversation. He had subscribed to the New York Times, daily and Sunday, he would read it from cover to cover. He knew the names of the Presidents, the Vice-President, the Judges of the Supreme Court, Senators and Representatives. He was well informed about the bills before Congress and the House of Representatives and the State Legislatures. Since there were not very many newspapers to go around, no radios, and no television, he was providing the news to the community.

D.C.H. –“in discussing public affairs, he always took the lead and knew so much about them that others could not follow him. Some of his neighbors thought he was making up the things he was saying. … He was known as a well informed man and a good Democrat after reading the New York Times for so many years.”

He was a Civil War veteran, who was mustered from March 16, 1864 and discharged July 1, 1865. He was in Battle of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, served under Phil Sheridan. He and his four brothers served the war. The youngest brother who went against his parents wishes, ran off at night, leaving a note that he was going to join the army and serve his county,… taking some money out the jelly jar and ran off to the army. He was killed in battlev and he buried under an apple tree. Daniel applied for the Civil War Pension and he also submitted an application for pension increase. We do know after the Civil War in the 1880 PA Census: Indiana County, Cherryhill Township, ed 139, p. 9, lines 5-13 Series T9, roll 1135, dwelling 65, family 68, on June 5, 1880, that Daniel Wolfe, aged 40 was already married to Susannah Dick, and he was a school master and a farmer. According to his obituary, he had taught for over 31 years.

It has been passed down the generations that his parents were of German Speaking people, and that his mother could not speak or write English very well. The family bible, now in the possession of John Richard Cope, Jr., was written in German, where as it lists the names of his parents, brothers and sisters births.
