Dear Stakeholder,

Highways England: M5 J11 Bridge Cluster scheme, changes to traffic management

We wrote to you earlier this year to advise you that Skanska, working on behalf of Highways England, would be carrying out vital works to a number of bridges along the M5, near junction 11.

This work has been progressing well since April, and is due to finish next summer. In January, as we shift our focus to work on the Bamfurlong Lane central bridge foundations and piers and the Cheltenham and Gloucester Underbridge deck, we will need to make some changes to the existing traffic management layout.

From 3 January 2017 until approximately the end of March 2017, there will be a contraflow arrangement (where traffic is taken onto the opposite carriageway for a set distance) in place. This will provide the space necessary for us to completely refurbish the Cheltenham and Gloucester Underbridge deck, replace the expansion joints and re-waterproof and resurface the road, while providing a safe working space for our colleagues.

The contraflow arrangement will provide two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound between January 2017 and February 2017 and then three lanes northbound and two lanes southbound between February 2017 and March 2017. The traffic management will then return to three narrow lanes in each direction from March until the end of the project.

The majority of the remaining work will take place during the day between the hours of 07:00 – 18:00, however as part of the traffic management installation works in January 2017, it will be necessary to fully close a section of the M5 carriageway to through traffic for one night. The full closures are currently programmed in as follows:

 3 January 2016 – full overnight total closures: southbound closure M5 J10 – J11; northbound closure M5 J11a – J10 and Junction 11 northbound entry slip road

During this overnight closure, there will be a fully signed diversion route in place.

As you will appreciate, the safety of all road users and workers is extremely important. The installation of this traffic management is designed to maintain the safety of both the road user and our workforce throughout the works. We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption the work may cause you. We’d like to thank you for your patience throughout this period of disruption. We will of course make every effort to ensure that the impact on the local community is kept to a minimum.

If you have any queries or comments about the works and would like further information, please contact the Highways England Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or by email: [email protected].

Yours sincerely,

Sam Landrigan Communications Manager Skanska
