So, You Re Going to Be a Fourth Grader . .

SO, YOU’RE GOING TO BE A FOURTH GRADER . . . Reading in Fourth Grade Reading is one the most important things a student can do to help them master skills needed in life. All students should be reading at home at least 30 minutes daily. Daily reading (at least 5 days per week) should continue throughout the summer. Students who don’t read during the summer come into fourth grade at a disadvantage. This time includes reading books, magazine articles, poetry, newspapers, etc. We will be focusing on the comprehension strategies of monitoring for understanding, visualizing, making connections, inferring, analyzing, and summarizing. All students at Naples (if they have access to the internet) are encouraged to use their MobyMax.com account over the summer. Students can spend their time on this program to get their reading minutes. Math in Fourth Grade In the 4th grade a lot of emphasis will be placed on knowing the multiplication and division facts. Students should have all multiplication facts mastered before entering the fourth grade. Mastery consists of being able to complete the 100 basic facts within a 5 minute time period. Around September 7, we will begin two digit multiplication (ex: 54 x 8). Students who do not have the multiplication facts mastered will struggle in math. Multiplication is then used extensively during the rest of the school year as we learn division, fractions, area, etc. Sample 4 th Grade Supply List Optional Student School Supplies 1 old sock (cotton) (This will be used as a dry-erase board eraser) Dry Erase Markers(3 per trimester) 1-2 Highlighters (optional) 1 Box Crayons or 1 Box Colored Pencils (optional) 1 Pencil Box (to hold pencils, erasers, and small items) (optional)
