National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS S) Met in This Lesson

Lesson Title: Fishy Behaviors and Habitats Lesson Author: Lora Evanouski Grade Level: 5 Subject Area: Science, Ecology Time Allotted: 60 minutes

Short Description of Lesson: During this lesson the students will identify Betta fish body parts. They will explore their behaviors in various habitats in a lab experiment.

Classroom Layout and Grouping of Students: The students will view this lesson from a smartboard or laptop individually at their desks. Exercises and printable enrichment activities will be completed in groups for lab experiment.

State Curriculum Standards met in this lesson: Goal 1.6: Understand Scientific Inquiry and Develop Critical Thinking Skills 5.S.1.6.4 Use evidence to analyze descriptions, explanations, predictions, and models. (604.01.d)

Goal 5.1: Understand Common Environmental Quality Issues, Both Natural and Human Induced 5.S.5.1.1 Identify issues for environmental studies. (611.01.a)

National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS•S) met in this lesson:

1. Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression. c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students:

a. plan strategies to guide inquiry. b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. d. process data and report results.

4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students: a. identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation. b. plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. d. use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions.

Instructional Objectives: The students will be able to: 1. Locate the 10 anatomy parts of a Betta fish with 90% accuracy

2. Identify key behaviors of Betta fish with 90% accuracy

3. Observe movements of fish and catalogue activities with 90% accuracy

4. Identify at least 4 differences in Betta behaviors when alone and when exposed to another Betta with 90% accuracy

5. Create a habitat for their Betta using either power-point, word doc and hand drawn

Materials, Resources and Technology: 1. Smartboard and laptop with internet access 2. Pencils, pens, and markers or crayons 3. Copies of observation worksheet 4. Copies of fish anatomy worksheet 5. 2 Betta fish in tanks with dividers (2 males, 2 females) 6. Two fish nets 7. Picture of Betta fish Vocabulary: mouth, dorsal fin, ventral fin, anal fin, caudal fin, pectoral fin, caudal peduncle, scales, eyes, operculum, habitat

Student's Present level of Performance and Knowledge: This is an introductory lesson on fish (Betta) behaviors and habitat. No specific knowledge about fish or fish behavior is needed to perform this lesson. Students have knowledge of using Microsoft word and basic navigation skills of the internet.

Instructional Procedures Lesson Set: Introduce lesson by explaining the species of Betta fish and showing real example in container. Ask students if they have ever seen one. Explain where they are from, and what kind of habitat they live in. Relate stories of how Bettas can survive with a male and female present but if 2 males are present very aggressive behaviors may lead to one of the males killing the other male present.

Techniques and Activities:

Present an image on the smartbroad of a Betta showing the external anatomical parts.

1. Discuss vocabulary and point out where each piece of the anatomy is on the Betta fish

2. Discuss different appearances of fins of males to females

3. Have students come to the smartbroad to locate various parts by answering questions and touching screen.

Have students use image being created with rollovers use image http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/evanouskil/506/betta_fish_22222.html http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/evanouskil/506/betta_female_2222.html

4. Have students break into pairs to discuss and quiz each other on anatomical parts, behaviors and habitats. Students may use resource web sites for help.

5. Have students watch http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/evanouskil/506/intro_betta_3.html

to expand knowledge of Bettas on the smartboard or laptop.

6. Once lesson is completed have students observe Bettas in two groups (split class in half). Group A will observe 2 males interacting. Group B will observe female interaction. Have students’ catalogue observations on worksheet. Have students observe breathing, eye movements, gill movements, aggressive behaviors, and territorial behaviors.

7. Have Group A observe female interaction and Group B observe male interaction. Catalogue observations as before.

8. Then have students switch fish into same containers, so you have a male/female interacting in the same container. Repeat observations.

9. Then feed each group of Bettas. Observe feeding patterns of Bettas, catalogue observed behaviors.

Lesson Closure: Wrap up lesson by having students talk about what they found during the lab exercise. Talk about what they learned about Betta’s behaviors and habitats. Have students list any behaviors not on the list to investigate further. Have the students present power-point presentation or word doc to class of behaviors and habitats observed. Have students draw favorite Betta behavior and/or habitat. The teacher will then talk about the next lesson of animal behaviors and habitats.

Adaptations for Special Learners: For visual disabilities have student paired with partner. Have Braille, large print and audio volume control set on computer. For learning disabled student, use large color pictures to help reinforce learning. Students could also use personal laptops to pace learning.

Supplemental Activities: Extension and remediation: Have students create an Excel spreadsheet or Word doc with fish behaviors cataloguing the various behaviors, descriptions of fish and where the fish were observed. Once the spreadsheet or word doc is created have students write up a report and post on the class blog or website. Pictures can also be posted with report.

Assessment/Evaluation: Informal Assessment: Have students identify fish anatomy to class while viewing pictures. Appropriate feedback to correct or incorrect answers. Have students draw favorite fish behavior and habitat observed.

Formal Assessment: Students will present word doc presentation to the class. This will be graded by peers and answers discussed. Grades will be taken from work turned in.

Student Products: Word doc presentation. If extension exercises are used the artifacts of excel spreadsheet and report posted to blog.
