 About the class: Math 20 prepares students for College level mathematics courses. It covers solving equations and inequalities in one variable, rational numbers and functions, irrational numbers, complex numbers, quadratic equations, quadratic functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and nonlinear systems, matrices and graphing.

 Prerequisites: Math 31.

 What we will cover: chapters 1-10. See tentative schedule for details.

 Homework will be assigned each day during class. It is your responsibility to have all of problems correctly completed. All work must be shown. Answers without supporting work earn zero points. Homework on each chapter is due on the day of test on that chapter. It should be stapled with your name written on the first page. No late homework or extra credit will be accepted.

 Group problem solving is the primary method of instruction for this class. You will work in groups of 3 to 5 each day on an assignment. Scientific calculators can be used to help with certain homework assignment however, graphing calculators are not allowed in this class.

 Exams: We will have 4 exams and a final exam. There will be no make up on tests or final. To compensate for emergencies I will drop your lowest test. The final exam will be cumulative. Failing to take the final exam will result in a grade of F in this course.

 Attendance: On time attendance is mandatory for this class. Roll will be taken daily and you are responsible for being in class every day. If you miss a lecture, it is your responsibility to contact a classmate for information you missed. If you are absent more than four times, you may be withdrawn from the class.

 Turn off your cell phones and pagers while in class. Do not eat or drink in class. You may earn up to 50 points for your participation however, Participation grade is based on appropriate attendance, punctuality, and attentiveness in class. Any distracting behaviors will result in a zero in participation.  Basis of grading: The course grade will be determined as follow

Chapter Tests 600 points

Assignments 100 points (This general category includes homework assignments, group problem solving, and extra credit.)

Attendance 50 points

Final Exam 250 points

 Final grades will be assigned according to the following percentage ranges:

A 88-100 B 78-87.9 C 65-77.9 D 50-64.9 F below 50
