Classroom Policies: . Be RESPONSIBLE. . Be RESPECTFUL. . Be SAFE. (see specifics on back) . ALL students must come prepared to class. This includes having any materials needed for that day. . Homework assignments, projects, essays, etc. are due on the given date. If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, the student will turn in the assignment when he/she returns. . Assessments are usually announced at least two days in advance. If a student is absent the day of an assessment, he/she will make it up the day of return or on a mutually agreed-upon day. . Cheating/ Plagiarism on an assignment will not be tolerated. . Grade scale: o A = 90 – 100 o B = 80 – 89 o C = 70 – 79 o D = 60 – 69 o F = 59 and below . Per district policy, a student’s average will be computed using Formative Assessments (25% of grade) and Summative Assessments (75% of grade). . Assessments, daily assignments, essays, etc. will be assigned throughout the year. Point values for each will be announced beforehand.

This class (ELA) is broken down into two disciplines: reading and langua. The following is a very brief overview:

Reading . The reading curriculum will consist of the Prentice-Hall literature text, Collections text with Close Reader and online component, independent readings, novels, and essays. Students will be given 4-6 weeks’ notice when a novel should be purchased. . We will also utilize technology to enhance learning through websites such as NoRedInk, my.hrw.com, Kahoot, etc. . Assessments, daily assignments, reading logs, Independent Novel Studies, etc. will be assigned throughout the year. Point values for each will be announced beforehand.

Language . The language curriculum will consist of Latin and Greek Root word handouts, the Vocabulary Workshop workbook, grammar exercises, writing assignments/essays, and journal writing. . Be Responsible . arrive on time with appropriate materials . have all assignments on time and turned in . ask for help when you don’t understand . obtain missing assignments/work when absent . keep all areas clean . accept consequences without arguing or complaining

Be Respectful . use conversational tone, volume, and appropriate language . maintain gum-free zone . respect personal work area . respect property of others . listen when others are speaking . raise your hand and wait to be called upon . maintain respectful demeanor

Be Safe . keep hands, feet, objects to self . keep legs of chairs and desks flat on floor . keep aisles clear . enter/exit in an orderly fashion . pass materials in an appropriate manner

Earned rewards for students who follow the behavioral expectations may include:

Just a few hints for success:

 Read 20 minutes per night and keep up-to-date with reading log DAILY.  Keep all materials in a ONE-INCH BINDER, which should be purchased by Sept. 6. This binder will be kept in class most of the time.  Refer to RUBRICS when given a project to complete. The directions and expectations will be clearly stated on these rubrics.  Slow down, check your work, and give 100%!
