Hospice Chaplain: Creating Excellence in Spiritual Care Friday Oct. 19, 2012 Conference Agenda
Over the course of the past two years, a TNMHO “Chaplain’s Development Committee” was formed to dialogue with medical professionals and hospice chaplains, conduct surveys of administrators and of chaplains, and to identify any areas of needed improvement in the spiritual care provided by hospice chaplains. In response to the needs and concerns identified by this committee, and feedback from chaplains and administrators, we are pleased to invite you to attend this special training for the hospice chaplain in the West Texas area. Training will be held at Hospice of Lubbock & Covenant Palliative Care, 3702 21st Street, Lubbock, Texas

8:45-10:15 Exploring and Supporting Patient Spirituality Our patients' spiritual paths are increasingly varied, requiring chaplains to develop greater resources, knowledge, and our own sense of spiritual groundedness to care for them with integrity. This session will cover assessment, spiritual care resources, and personal and professional boundaries for chaplains when caring for persons of their own faith, differing faiths, and no specified faith. A time of large and small group dialogue about issues raised will be included in this presentation.

2:15-3:15 Spiritual Care to the Dementia Patient Providing spiritual care for patients with dementia can be challenging, and even daunting, leading some of us to either dread or even avoid it altogether! We will provide an overview of Alzheimer's type dementia, and discuss tools for caring for the spiritual needs of patients with this disease.
3:15-4:15 Compassion Fatigue Caregiver Stress is the stress that comes from long term or intense care giving. It manifests itself through physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Find out how to identify the warning signs, and learn strategies for lowering caregiver stress.
