Thank you for agreeing to serve as a screener for the 2012 Queer Foundation English essay contest. There are only 14 essays this year (we advertised with the counselors' newsletter rather than in NCTE publications; we won't be eager to make that mistake again). Please identify the ones you find to be truly outstanding. Criteria: originality, accuracy, objectivity (not looking for sob stories), and effectiveness (the potential to change the reader's opinions, attitude, or behavior). Grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation count.
To score the essays, consider that you have 14 "gold stars" to award. If you believed all 14 essays were of equal merit, then you would award one gold star to each essay. However, to show that some essays are better than others, you would award some essays zero stars and, instead, use those stars to give extra stars to the best essays. You could conceivably award all 14 stars to the one essay you believed to be better than all the rest. But I urge you to call attention to as many outstanding essays as you find here by distributing the 14 "stars" among them.
To go to the essays, click here. Or point your browser to http://queerfoundation.org/docs/essays/QF0212SAs.html.
Please email results to [email protected] by March 22.
Best regards,
Joe

Queer Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients for 2012–13
The Queer Foundation has announced its college scholarship recipients for 2012–2013. Sophia Deady of Minneapolis, Alan Quinn of Annandale, VA, and Skailer Qvistgaard of Fairfield, CA, will each receive a $1,000 scholarship for studies at the college or university of their choice.
Deady will attend Smith College. The title of her essay is “A Woman Like Me: Pink Ink and My Coming Out Story.”
Quinn will attend New York University. His essay is titled "What I Know Now."
Qvistgaard, who will study at Boston University, was recognized for his essay “Now I Am Skailer."
The Queer Foundation, a Washington nonprofit corporation, offers $1,000 scholarships each year to the top essayists in its high school seniors English essay contest. Recipients can use the prize for studies in queer theory or a related field at the U.S. college or university of their choice.
Scholarships are administered by the Queer Foundation, a Washington nonprofit corporation and a 501(c)(3) public charity located in Seattle. Applicants need not be Washington residents.
Recipients are known as Queer Scholars. Their presence on campus will have a positive effect on the conditions of their fellow lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students and other queer youth.
The scholarships enable LGBTQA (queer and allied) youth, by means of their studies and effective writing, to contribute to building a stable future for queer youth through business/community involvement and self-directed improvement.
Queer Scholars receive, as needed, mentoring, academic advising, and tutoring to enable them to succeed in their studies. In return they are required to (a) maintain a suitable grade point average as determined by the college, (b) practice self care, and (c) give back to the community through doing community service, authoring queer studies papers, and/or mentoring high school or other college students.

Queer Foundation to Offer Three $1,000 College Scholarships for 2013–14 to Top Essayists in Eighth Annual High School Seniors English Essay Contest
To the top essayists in the 2012-13 high school seniors English essay contest, $1,000 scholarships are available for studies in queer theory or a related field at the U.S. college or university of their choice in 2013–14.
The Queer Foundation's Effective Writing and Scholarships Program provides, nationwide, $1,000 college scholarships to outstanding LGBTQA (queer and allied) high school students, winners of an annual English essay contest to promote queer studies to improve the lives of queer youth. Collected, the essays form queer-the-curriculum materials for use in high schools to benefit all LGBTQA students. Competing in the essay contest gives academically talented LGBTQA students another means and reason to be out and proud members of their communities—small or large—and to recognize that sexual minority status is seen as a plus.
The scholarships enable LGBTQA youth, by means of their studies and effective writing, to contribute to building a stable future for queer youth through business/community involvement and self-directed improvement.
Application deadline: February 15, 2013
Queer Scholars * are out, proud, and activist, * have a social conscience, * will fight discrimination against queers, * are committee to social change, * believe in organization, * are of good will.
The Queer Foundation is a Washington nonprofit corporation and a 501(c)(3) public charity. Find us on GuideStar.org (search for "queer scholars"). Donations help build the scholarship endowment and promote the best and brightest young queer writers of today.

The Seventh Annual QF high school seniors English essay contest is now underway, and I would be honored to have you serve as a contest judge. The deadline for submissions is February 18. As a judge, you would receive the essays in early April and have until the end of April to report back. Please let me know if you would like to participate.
It means so much to the students to know that their essays are read by published authors. Thank you!
