Positive East is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic intern for a four month community fundraising internship. The internship is ideal for someone looking to start a career in events management and fundraising, and will allow the successful candidate a valuable insight into the charity sector.

Positive East is the leading HIV charity in east London, providing a comprehensive and holistic range of services to support and enable individuals and communities to meet the challenges presented by HIV.

You will be responsible for the management and coordination of one of Positive East’s fundraising events in 2012 under the supervision of Positive East’s Community and Events Fundraising Officer. You will also support the charity’s pre-existing portfolio of events including challenge activities, special events, and other community fundraising activities. You will develop particular skills in event management, promotion and marketing, database management, research and stewardship. Specialist training opportunities for your own skills development will be made available.

The ideal candidate will be a hard working self-starter with a personable and passionate attitude to drive success. You will be enthusiastic about creating events and managing details to ensure fundraising events are high quality. You will also find the work of the charity interesting and be able to speak warmly to new audiences about its importance.

This is a voluntary position however travel and lunch expenses will be covered. Hours are negotiable based. The internship will be based at Positive East Stepney Centre.

Roles and Responsibilities

 Manage your own event which you have designed and planned by the end of your tenure, with a fundraising target of £5,000.  Support the Community and Events Fundraising Officer in the coordination, promotion, and logistics of pre-existing community fundraising events, challenge events, and special events.  Research and contact local venues to organise additional fundraising activities (e.g. quiz nights in pubs, collections in churches).  Oversee the distribution and management of Positive East’s external fundraising/marketing materials to local venues.  Supporting recruitment, management and actively motivating volunteers for community activities.  Contribute to the organisation’s development of a stewardship programme by appropriately stewarding supporters, including volunteers, and update/store their details on Raisers Edge database.  Co-ordinate the administration of community donations, collections and events, in liaison with the Finance Officer.  Produce articles to contribute to Positive East’s newsletter and press campaign around forthcoming events and activities.  Attend community fundraising group monthly meetings to share suggestions, feedback, keeping up to date with the progression of the events.

Experience and skills required

Essential:  Self-starter with motivation and drive.  Strong people skills, with a particular understanding of client and customer relationship management.  Excellent communication skills and an ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, in person, on the telephone, and via written communication.  Excellent organisational skills which enable you to multi-task while remaining an impeccable attention to detail.  Strong research skills and proficiency with Microsoft packages (Excel, Word, and Outlook).  Demonstrable ability to self-start on tasks, use own initiative and manage own workload. You must have experience of working as part of a team, as well as independently.  Appreciation of cultural diversity. Desirable:  Previous community fundraising and/or events management experience.  An interest in and understanding of issues that affect people living with HIV.
