Summary Interdisciplinary academic background with degrees in development studies, agronomy, and philosophy and religion studies. Over 15 years’ experience of development work with both overseas and Spanish based NGOs, including three years working with indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and twelve years as Director of the Spanish or- ganisation, ALBOAN (www.alboan.org). Current research is on the interaction of local governments, mining companies and social movements at the local level in the Peruvian context. The aim is to explain variations in patterns of conflict and cooperation among these actors in different regions of the country.

Career History:

1994-2006: Director of ALBOAN, NGO for international cooperation based in Bilbao with operations in 12 countries (www.alboan.org). During this time I worked on projects in Peru, Colombia, and India (Gujurat). I also visited and established links with organisations in El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia and Cambodia.

1991-1994: Santa María de Nieva (Alto Marañón, Peru) I took part in the foundation of SAIPE, a local NGO. This organization was formed by and devoted to the service of indi- genous people (Aguarunas and Huambisas) who account for the majority of the popula- tion in this part of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. The main responsibility was to set up the activities programme and to build the team.

1998-2004: Lecturer at Deusto University. Teaching optional courses on social analysis

2000-2006: Member of the Basque Government Advisory Board for International Cooper- ation
