Mr. Strohm welcomed and thanked everyone for attending the meeting. Mr. Hellem reviewed the SP anti-trust guidelines and recommended that each member indicate in their notes of the meeting that the guidelines were discussed.

The agenda for the meeting was reviewed. Mr. Strohm briefly outlined the presentations given on metrics at the July 24 Membership Meeting, and indicated that the SP Metrics Work Group project would be best served by establishing an open forum for companies to report information according to their individual comfort levels. Issues that arose included: what metrics to implement; how to normalize those metrics; use of individual versus aggregate data; and confidentiality.

Ms. Sandy Brewer, GM, noted the goal of the meeting was to promote progress by establishing a foundation for information that will be reported within the Metrics Work Group. This would provide a method by which member companies can take information from the reports and utilize it to their advantage. The Metrics Work Group Co-Chair Mr. Scott Stanley, Guardian Automotive, emphasized the goal of the project is to provide metrics for use by management and stakeholders. The metrics developed should show overall progress of SP, share information and drive best practices as well as demonstrate a continual improvement process for SP member companies. Mr. Strohm noted the potential topics for metric categories, and a consensus was reached that energy would be an ideal starting point. Other categories discussed and agreed upon included: waste, toxics, water usage, normalization and material usage. Each topic was assigned to an SP member to be explored in greater detail in a 1-2 page summary document. The assignments are as follows:

• Energy – Kristin Zimmerman, GM • Waste – Sandy Brewer, GM • Toxics – Pat Beattie, GM • Water Usage – Brad Strohm, Delphi • Normalization – Dan Luria, MMTC • Materials Usage – Brad Strohm.

The requirement for participation within each metric project was also discussed--as to whether companies would report all data on each metric category, or whether individual case studies would be used for more specific categories. The general consensus was that this was not necessarily an either/or situation; both were viable solutions depending on the given project. The issue of data aggregation was also discussed, specifically whether data would be compiled on an individual basis or through SP as a whole. Again, the consensus was that both options seem viable and could provide beneficial information depending on the given project. Normalization of data arose as an issue as well, as it would be in the interest of each company to report data using the same standards, thereby making aggregation of total data less time and labor intensive.

Mr. Strohm raised the issue of participation in the Metrics Work Group, whether participation rights would be extended to just SP members or to the automotive sector as a whole. It was suggested that SP could investigate sponsoring workshops or events that would allow non-members a chance to become excited about participating in a metrics project and have this excitement carry over into an interest to join SP. Mr. Hellem emphasized the sensitivity to and importance of the legal issues that accompany the trade association, specifically with regard to inviting non-members to participate in member-sponsored events.

The next conference call of the Environmental Performance Metrics Work Group will be held on Tuesday, September 16 at 2:00pm EDT.

ACTION ITEMS: • One page documents for each metric category will be completed and sent to Mr. Strohm and Ms. Goldman by COB September 5. • Mr. Strohm will compile metric documents and send a draft proposal to Ms. Goldman by COB September 10. • Ms. Beattie will send web conferencing information to Ms. Goldman for the upcoming conference call on Tuesday, September 16, 2:00-4:00pm EDT.

On a motion duly made and seconded, the meeting was adjourned at 2:00pm EDT.

Respectfully Submitted,

Amy Goldman Director
