Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Ms. Ouheish’s 6th Grade Math Lab. This is going to be a great year filled with many opportunities for success. The grade 6 mathematics program emphasizes the following content clusters as they align with the grade six Common Core State Standards adopted by the state of New Jersey: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Successful completion of the sixth grade mathematics program prepares students for entry into the seventh grade mathematics program. This class will provide extra Math support for students and reinforce Math skills students may be struggling with.

Materials Needed - (all supplies are in addition to the student’s core math class)

 Several sharpened pencils

 One pocket folder

 One 1” flexible binder

 Math journal (composition notebook)

 Two red pens

 Loose leaf paper

 calculator ~ Texas Instrument TI34 – recommended

*Not needed right away

Homework Homework is a very important part of this class. Written assignments should be completed in pencil in your marble notebook unless otherwise stated. If written homework is not assigned, students should look over their notes and vocabulary words. Homework is an integral part of the course and is designed to review and reinforce skills learned in class. If the homework is not done on time the student will lose credit for that assignment. Because of the nature, some assignments will not be accepted after the date they are due.

Tests and Quizzes

All tests will be announced in advance. Quizzes may or may not be announced. All tests and quizzes will be returned to students for corrections. Students are required to make all corrections prior to obtaining a parent’s signature. Signed and corrected tests/quizzes are due back in school the next day.

Absences

Students who are absent are responsible for all work missed. This includes notes, class work, and homework. All students should have a “homework buddy,” someone who can be relied upon to obtain missing notes and assignments.

Preparedness

Students are expected to come to class prepared every day with notebook, journal, folder, paper, and pencil. Bringing the above list of materials, all assignments completed, and a willingness to learn and participate is crucial for success. Agenda Books

Agenda books serve a variety of purposes. Students must have their agenda books at all times. Each day the student will write their homework down in the agenda book. Students will use the agenda book to keep record of their homework and future assignments

Extra help

Extra help is available in Room 101 after school. Students should let me know in advance.

Notebooks

Notebooks will be checked periodically.

Math Journals

This year you will have the opportunity to reflect upon the BIG IDEAS that are central to 6th grade mathematics. Building a conceptual understanding of these ideas takes practice and many opportunities for reflection. Sometimes we will reflect upon large, over-arching ideas while other times we will reflect upon smaller, more topical ideas.

Participation

All students are expected to participate in class. Students will get credit for participating in class. Participation in class is the key to success. This allows me to see how well the students are grasping the concepts verbally.

Math Projects Throughout the year students will be assigned math projects to complete. These projects will always be accompanied with a rubric, so student expectations are clear. Students will be given ample time both in class and at home to complete the project.

*Parents, please review this plan with your child as I have and return the attached sheet with your signatures to me tomorrow. This rules and procedure form should be kept in the front of each student’s binder at all times.

Sincerely,

Ms. Ouheish
