Essay on Cynthia Rylant’s “Stray”

Respect

The story “Stray” by Cynthia Rylant is about a little girl who found a stray dog. She respected the dog. This story is about treating people and animals the way you want to be treated. This story taught me a lesson from my past. In the beginning of the story the mom did not yell. She just said, “Where did that come from? “She is trying to teach Doris that you can not always get what you want that you have to earn it. She does not yell at her because she knows how it fells to want something you can not have. She does not talk to people rudely. She talks to them normally. So she treats people with respect. One day her dad came into the room and took the dog. Doris was sad but did not whine because she respected her dad and mom. So you see she is very respectful to people and animals the way you want to bet treated. When the dad took the dog away from Doris, he took the dog to the pound. He did not like it, so he came back with the dog and said, “That was the worst place ever.” What he did not like was that they waited 6 days and then they would kill the dogs. So he did treat people and animals the way they wanted to be treated. The story affected me a lot. It connects with my life because I wanted a dog. I waited and waited and I never got it. The story taught me that when you want something that you can not have sometimes it is because your mom or dad can not take care of the dog and you at the same time. Doris respected everyone in the story, even the dad when he took the dog away.
