Workshop theme will be coordinated/discussed with your guest speaker and tailored to your own and your peers’ needs and experiences. Workshop should be min. 1.5 hours and max. 4 hours. Sample topics: Addressing unconscious biases. How to align career goals and personal life choices. Transitioning after the PhD. Professional networking. Building relationships with potential reference-letter writers. Overcoming imposter syndrome. Success in science through resilience and tenacity. Or other, field-specific mentoring topics.

Group size: Typically ranges between 30 and 50 participants, but is not limited.

Venue: The workshop will be held on the UBC Vancouver campus.

Organizing committee’s responsibilities: Coordinate speaker invitation with departmental/institute seminar hosts. Coordinate theme, date/time and length of workshop with guest speaker. Book a suitable room. Set up event page and provide link to Dean’s office. Advertise the workshop (Dean’s office can help with this), invite your target audience, and manage registrations. Order catering. Host the workshop. Collect feedback from workshop participants. Provide a brief written report to the Fund’s oversight committee (within one month after workshop; including theme, speaker (name, job title/affiliation), date/venue, participant demographics, feedback summary).

Eligible costs: Catering (snacks/refreshments) at the workshop, and up to half of the speaker’s travel expenses – with a total funding up to max. $1,500 for one workshop proposal. Use of on-campus food services such as the AMS’s Nest Catering preferred. Token of appreciation for speakers may be considered; the value of gifts must be below $100 per speaker.
