International Dues for 2010-2011

There are members and clubs that have still not paid dues to the International level. Budgeting for the term is extremely difficult when it is not known how many members we have. The Board urges members and clubs to pay dues immediately. This can be done via the secure on-line payment system on the POWERtalk International website www.powertalkinternational.com. Go to the pull-down tab “Shop” and click on “Dues/ Donations”. Members who have not paid dues will be denied access to the resources on the POWERtalk International website.

International Board Meeting ONE + ONE

Prior to the POWERtalk International Training Weekend in Kobe, Japan, the International Board had a 3-day in-person Board meeting. Much of the time was taken up with a brainstorming session on how to increase our membership. The result was simple and clear. One plus One. If every member would recruit a member we would increase our membership. The Board does not have a magic wand. The magic wand lies with you the member. We urge you to take up this huge challenge and get your club to set up a project to get every member to recruit a member to the organization. Print out the one-page poster included in this newsletter and promote it at your next club meeting. The Board would like everyone to be responsible to increase membership. Recognition of a member who recruits in a new member will be acknowledged by the International President and published in FtB as someone who is taking the membership situation seriously. Other incentives will be published in the next From the Boardroom.

This is our mantra: ONE + ONE

The Training Power Pack set up by the President-Elect – Carol Preiss for Region Conferences and Training Weekends in 2011 will focus on expansion of the organization, and the “why and how” to create new clubs.

From the Boardroom #88 – November 2010 www.powertalkinternational.com page 2 of 6 Expanding the organization is a #1 priority and the Board hopes that every member will take responsibility and become involved. International Training Weekend

This beautiful Japanese arrangement was on the cover page of the Program Book for the International Training Weekend hosted by the members of Japan Region. The weekend was a huge success with 422 members and guests attending from around the world. Those from abroad learnt more about Japanese culture and the Japanese members learnt more about the culture of members from other countries. The common goal was POWERtalk International. We all went home with a sense of admiration for what our organization stands for and for what we can achieve given willpower and enthusiasm. The text and PowerPoint presentations of the workshops presented at the International Training weekend will soon be available on the POWERtalk International Website for members to download and use.

POWERtalk Short Course

Message from Fellows of ITC Coordinator – Geraldine Lightfoot

POWERtalk 1 - #1, #2 and # 3 contain a vast amount of material which can be used by members to train club members in the skills needed to become proficient speakers. To

From the Boardroom #88 – November 2010 www.powertalkinternational.com page 3 of 6 present a longer POWERtalk workshop for your club, you may download the POWERtalk Short Course modules which can be found on the website under Member Resources ► Training and Publications ► POWERtalk Short Course. The two-hour POWERtalk short course modules are a great source of information when planning regular club programs. They are also excellent programs as last minute emergency fill-in or as a regularly scheduled event. It gives each member the opportunity to practice the POWERtalk lessons, provides instant evaluation as the program progresses and helps each member gain confidence in their speaking abilities. The training is presented by a club member or a team experienced in leading training workshops. Start by studying POWERtalk I thoroughly. Gaining an understanding of the content will allow you to begin planning workshops and exercises using these concepts. This training team should be an integral part of the Program Committee so that programs throughout the year logically work through the lessons in POWERtalk I. Education Feature(s) of the Month Workshop on Evaluation Hints for the General Evaluator Evaluating the General Evaluator

Submitted by Publication Chairman – Louise Stanford

Have you ever been at a meeting when the evaluator did not do a proper evaluation? I am sure we all have. Several times I have a hard time just sitting there and saying nothing when more should be said. If everyone would read the material on evaluation, have a workshop on how to evaluate, and even have the program chairman program a roundtable discussion on the general evaluator’s performance, it would be helpful to all members. I believe that evaluation is the most important part of any assignment. Too often bad habits seem to creep in and lesson the effect of presentations. Bad habits such as putting “OK’s” at the beginning or end of sentences. Bad habits such as arranging clothing or even bad habits like handling papers incorrectly. Good evaluation is what makes POWERtalk International such a wonderful place to learn. Again, I am asking members from around the world to add to our wonderful list of new educational material. I have some great new publications coming out soon and I will alert you when they have been added to the list on the website. All education features can be found on the POWERtalk International Website www.powertalkinternational.com in Member Resources ► Training and Publications ► Education features. Translators

The International Board is interested in members who would be willing to lighten the burden of translators from English into Greek, Japanese, Icelandic, Polish or Mexican/Spanish. If you are willing yourself or know of a member who could translate such things as this newsletter then please contact your Division Vice-President for further information.

FtB Survey

In the last two editions of From the Boardroom, the Editor requested members to reply to a survey with the goal to establish how many members were reading FtB. The response was astonishing. Of the more than 3000 members registered with POWERtalk International, less than 200 responded. Does this mean that only 200 members are reading the information distributed by the International Board about our organization? Does this mean that our members are not aware of the situation we are in? If we do not increase membership this term then POWERtalk International will no longer be viable as a training organization.
