Would you like to help recruit Greater Manchester Cancer Champions in January 2018?

Grants of £250 are available for you to help recruit Cancer Champions Grants of £500 are available for more ambitious proposals

Greater Manchester Cancer Champions are a growing movement of people who aim to prevent cancer, increase early diagnosis and support people living with and beyond cancer. At least 42% of cancer in Greater Manchester is preventable.

This fund will be open for voluntary and community groups, businesses and public sector teams across Greater Manchester. The aim is to help boost the numbers of people signing up as GM Cancer Champions by running 50 local level recruitment events throughout January 2018. Could you run an event or a session at your event?

What is a Greater Manchester Cancer Champion? Cancer Champions are ordinary people, who want to prevent Cancer in Greater Manchester, and could do one of the following ‘CALLS TO ACTION’:

1. Learn more about cancer so I can talk confidently with friends and family 2. Raise awareness about the importance of cancer screening and encourage people to take part 3. Speak up about why people in my community are getting cancer and what we could do about it 4. Talk to people about how a healthy lifestyle can help prevent cancer 5. Support others who are living with and beyond cancer, using my experience as someone who had/has cancer 6. Promote the involvement in services of the family and friends of people living with and beyond cancer 7. Encourage people in my community or workplace to become a cancer champion

Up to 40 groups, businesses or teams will receive £250 in grant funding and 10 groups, for more ambitious proposals, will receive £500. There is a total grant pot of £15,000.

We also welcome groups that are willing to put on events or sessions and would waive the grant funding but are keen to take part in the recruitment drive and to learn more about being a GM Cancer Champion. We are inviting groups to apply for funding to put on an event, or extend a current meeting/event, that recruits new Greater Manchester Cancer Champions. This can of course be from your business, team or network, as long as individuals are residents of or workers in Greater Manchester.

Those leading on their organisation’s Cancer Champion initiative will commit to running an event or session with at least 15 participants and will also commit to:

1. Signing up as a GM Cancer Champion as part of the application process 2. Running a recruitment event or session in January 2018. 3. Showing a GM Cancer Champion video at the event/session (this takes 3 minutes) 4. Distributing material explaining what GM Cancer Champions are and what they might pledge to do 5. Potentially focusing on one of the calls to action and deciding what you would collectively do (eg promoting cancer screening with your friends and family). 6. Get at least 10 participants to sign up as GM Cancer Champions

The GM Cancer Champions project is supported by VSNW on behalf of the Greater Manchester VCSE Devolution Reference Group and works in partnership with the GM Cancer Vanguard and the GM Health and Social Care Partnership.

The closing date for applications is: Sunday 26th November 2017

How will applications be assessed?

Applications will be judged on:  numbers of people attending and expected numbers of new GM Cancer Champions  location of event (we want a spread across the 10 boroughs and we are particularly interested in areas with high cancer rates)  who events are open to  spread of dates in January  how you will involve communities or groups with high cancer rates  innovative ideas for drawing in more people  whether you will focus on a particular call to action

The panel that will assess and score applications will be made up of one member of the VSNW team, one member of the VCSE Devolution Reference Group and one member of the GM Health and Social Care Partnership team.

Successful applicants will be informed on Thursday 30th November 2017.
