Required Text: Varies, based on consultation with instructor. Handouts. Required Materials: Classical guitar, sheet music, foot stool, pencil, performance stand. Optional Materials: Guitar tuner. Course Description: Guitar Ensemble is a performance class. Emphasis is placed on ensemble performance in a variety of musical styles. The ensemble will perform no less than one recital and on one recital review each semester. Performance(s): TBA.

Student Responsibilities:

· Skills: The ability to sight read for guitar is a prerequisite; however, students with less the adequate experience will be permitted to participate on a trial basis with the understanding that sight reading skills will be acquired in a timely manner. Failure to do so will result in the necessity to drop the course with an audition requirement for future entrance into the course. · Preparation: Practice daily; an appropriate amount of daily practice will be determined in consultation with instructor. · Maintain practice record: Each student must keep a detailed record of assignments and practice habits. Failure to do so will result in lower grades. · Attend class: Attendance is mandatory. You are responsible for all assignments, tests, and deadlines regardless of absences. Missed assignments due to unexcused absences will result in a “0”; conversely, missed assignments due to excused absences will not be averaged with your grades. · Be on time: Professional musicians are always on time. · Meet deadlines: Deadlines will be established for goal-setting and grading purposes. Failure to meet deadlines will result in lower grades. · Be Courteous: Please turn off cell phones and pagers for the duration of the class. No food or drink in class. Discriminatory, rude, abusive, and profane language will not be permitted, nor will personal attacks on any individual. You are responsible for being respectful and courteous in class and through electronic communication. Honesty is expected at all times. Absences:

· Student absence: Advance notification of impending absence is necessary. Failure to notify instructor of absence will result in lower grade and will not warrant a make-up lesson. Students that give advance notification of absence (at least 24 hours) will have the opportunity to make-up the missed lesson at the instructor’s discretion. Unless in excess, excused absences will not result in a lowered grade. · Instructor absence: Instructor will notify students in advance of absences.

Grading Procedures: Grades are determined by: · attendance · recital performance · participation · preparation for class · maintenance of practice record · meeting deadlines · progress · initiative · attitude · dependability
