CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Entries in the following categories are invited from eligible members of the Victorian current and ex-service communities:

1. WRITING – Please note all writing categories have a limit of 3,000 words Category 1A True Wartime Experience Category 1B True Life Experience Category 1C Fiction Category 1D Poetry Category 1E “Centenary of Anzac – 100 Years of Service”

2. ART Category 2A Oils – Novice Category 2B Oils – Experienced Category 2C Other Media – Novice Category 2D Other Media – Experienced Category 2E Advanced – All Media

3. CRAFT Category 3A Textile & Fibre (eg. knitting, decoupage, etc) Category 3B Needlework (works produced with a needle) Category 3C Ceramics/Glass Category 3D 3 Dimensional (3D) Art & Sculpture Category 3E Wood

4. PHOTOGRAPHY Category 4A War/ Armed Services Category 4B Open Category 4C Portraits

Page 1 HOW MANY ENTRIES CAN YOU SUBMIT?

You may submit 3 entries The 3 entries may all be lodged in the same category, or spread across different categories.

You may submit 4 entries if your 4th entry is from the Special writing category (1E).

ELIGIBILITY

The following members of the ex-service community residing in VICTORIA are eligible to enter the competition:

You do not have to be TPI, however, you need to fully explain how special hardship made it difficult for you to produce your entry. Please contact the coordinator on 9496 2290 to obtain the appropriate forms for consideration.

NOT FOR COMPETITION

The 2015 competition will allow entrants to display (and sell) items that are deemed “Not For Competition”. These entries will not be judged as part of the competition or eligible for prizes. Simply circle NFC on the applicable entry form.

Page 2 RULES FOR EVERYONE 1. Three entries in total may be submitted. (You may submit 4 entries if your 4th entry is from the 2015 Special Category 1E.) 2. Entry Forms must be received by the closing date of the competition. 3. Writing and poetry entries may be posted or e-mailed and must be received by 31 July 2015. Art entries must be delivered to Wattle Hall at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. 4. Entry is subject to the SWAC Steering Committee’s discretion. 5. Entries must be original work. 6. Entries must not have been submitted in previous years. 7. Entries will not be accepted which the Steering Committee deems may be interpreted as glorifying the wartime activities of countries which fought against Australia or her allies. 8. Prizes and Awards are dependent on funding availability and subject to change without notice. 9. In each category the judge may select first, second, and third prizes and up to four honourable mentions. The number of prizes awarded in each category will be at the discretion of the judge. 10. The judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. 11. Entry of all items is at the entrant’s own risk. Delivery and collection of items is the responsibility of entrants. 12. All care will be taken but no responsibility is accepted for damage, theft or other mishaps. 13. The SWAC Steering Committee reserves the right not to display all visual entries if display space at the Exhibition venue is limited. 14. The winning Art, Craft and Photography entries will be photographed throughout the Exhibition week and will be available for collection on the “pick up days”. 15. Entries sold during the Exhibition over $50.00 attract a 10% commission payable to SWAC. 16. You must also read the “additional rules” for your particular section/s. 17. An entrant who has won 1st prize in the same category for 3 consecutive years will be considered a “MASTER”. This entrant will be able to contribute, display and sell items at the SWAC Exhibition, but will not be eligible for any of the prizes published in the Conditions of Entry, unless the entry relates to a different category.

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR WRITING ENTRIES 1. Writing entries MUST NOT exceed 3,000 words in length. 2. Entries must be works that have not been published. 3. A chapter from an unpublished book is acceptable provided it does not exceed the 3,000 word limit. 4. Include a title page with your name, identification details and the title of your entry. 5. Entries should be submitted on A4 size paper (the same size as this page) and must be fixed in the top left-hand corner. 6. Type-written entries are strongly preferred but hand written entries, provided they are readable, are acceptable and will not disadvantage you. 7. Entries should be typed or written on one side of the page only. 8. All True Wartime Experience stories (Category 1A) will be forwarded to the Australian War Memorial Private Records collection upon completion of the competition. 9. Only copies of your work should be submitted, not original manuscripts. 10. ALL writing entries need to be submitted with the Entry Form by the closing date (31 July 2015) to be eligible. Page 3 ADDITIONAL RULES FOR ART ENTRIES

1. Your name, DVA or other identification number, the title of your entry, whether it is for sale and the sale price should be written on the back UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER of the picture. 2. The Steering Committee reserves the right to change the category under which a painting is to be judged. 3. Except in the Oils-Novice or Other Media-Novice Categories, reproductions of works by other artists will not be permitted. Clear indication that the entry is a reproduction must be shown on the entry form and the work itself. 4. Entries should be framed and a secure method of hanging (eye hooks, wire or some other acceptable method) must be provided by the entrant. 5. Care should be taken that the same details appear on the entry form as on the submitted artwork. In all cases of discrepancy, the information on the entry form will be taken as correct. 6. The category “Oils” has been differentiated from the “Other Media” category due to the numbers of oil paintings submitted, and is not a reflection on the relative difficulty of different techniques.

NOVICE 7. The definition of “Novice” for the purposes of this competition is an entrant who: a) has not previously won a major prize in this or any other competition for the particular medium in question b) has entered this competition for at least 3 years in the same category but wishes to remain in the “Novice” section at their own discretion, or c) is deemed to be a “Novice” by the Steering Committee.

EXPERIENCED 8. The definition of “Experienced” for the purposes of this competition is an entrant who: a) has won major prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd) in the Novice category for the medium in question b) has won major prizes in any other competition for the medium in question c) has entered under the “Novice” category for at least 3 years and wishes to enter “Experienced” at their own discretion, or d) is deemed to be “Experienced” by the Steering Committee.

ADVANCED 9. The definition of “Advanced” for the purposes of this competition is an entrant who: a) has previously won a first prize in the “Experienced” category of the medium in question b) has won major prizes in other competitions c) is an accomplished or professional artist in the medium in question, or d) is deemed to be “Advanced” by the Steering Committee.

MASTER The definition of “Master” for the purposes of this competition is an entrant who has won first prize in the same category for three consecutive years. In subsequent years, this entrant may be able to contribute, display and sell items at the SWAC Exhibition, but will not be eligible for

Page 4 any of the prizes published in the Conditions of Entry, unless the entry relates to a different category. Entry forms for this category may be requested from the Coordinator.

Page 5 ADDITIONAL RULES FOR CRAFT 1. Your name and DVA identification number, the title or description of your entry, whether it is for sale and the sale price must be written on the back or base of the entry, or otherwise firmly attached. 2. Where craft entries are framed or are intended to be hung on a wall a secure method of hanging either by eye hooks and wire or some other acceptable method must be provided by the entrant. 3. Care should be taken that the same details appear on the entry form as on the submitted craft work. In all cases of discrepancy, the information on the entry form will be taken as correct. 4. The Steering Committee reserves the right to change the category under which a craft work is to be judged. 5. Category 3A Textile & Fibre entries include, but are not limited to: knitting, crochet, tatting, macramé, silk painting, decoupage, papier maché, and weaving. 6. Category 3B Needlework entries are those produced through the act of working with a needle. They include, but are not limited to sewing, embroidery, tapestry, cross stitch, needle point, leather work and quilting. 7. Category 3C Ceramics & Glass entries include painted porcelain, fired ceramics, etched and painted glass, mosaic, etc. 8. Category 3D being 3D Art / Sculpture would include items such as sculptures and models. 9. Category 3E Woodwork entries include furniture, home wares, boxes etc.

Any enquiries regarding items that are deemed difficult to assess in the Craft section should be directed to the SWAC Coordinator.

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR PHOTOGRAPHY 1. Original work only. 2. Your name, DVA or other identification number, the title of your entry, whether for sale and the sale price should be written on the back of the entry or otherwise firmly attached. 3. Photographs may be processed either at home or commercially. 4. Photographs must be mounted BUT NOT framed. 5. Photographs must not exceed 40cm x 50cm (16” x 20”). 6. It must be noted on the entry form if photographs have been altered digitally.

PUBLICATION OF WINNING ENTRIES Entrants should note that major prize and special award winning entries will be published in the book BRAVO! – Recollections and Reflections of the Veteran Community 2015; and also on the DVA internet web site.

All entrants will receive a free copy of BRAVO! 2015 Other editions of BRAVO! are for sale from the SWAC co-ordinator

The Story Writing & Art Competition prizes are chosen by Judges each year and awarded as follows:

1st Prize: $200.00 and Certificate 2nd Prize: $100.00 and Certificate 3rd Prize: $75.00 and Certificate Honourable Mentions: Certificate

The Sir Edmund Herring Memorial Prize - Engraved Silver Tray Sponsored by the Royal Australian Air Force Association (Vic Division). Awarded to the most outstanding first prize entry. This award is judged by the Story Writing & Art Competition Steering Committee.

The Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Award - Cheque Sponsored by the Returned & Services League (Victoria). Awarded to the first prize winner in the Story Writing True Wartime Experience category.

The Jessie Mary Vasey Memorial Encouragement Award – Framed certificate and prize Sponsored by the War Widows’ Guild of Australia (Victoria). Awarded by the Guild to a Craft entrant deemed worthy of encouragement.

The Lou Perlstein Award for Story Writing True Wartime Experience - Cheque and Engraved Plaque Sponsored by Carry-On (Victoria). This is awarded to an entrant deemed worthy of encouragement by the True Wartime Experience Judge.

The Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia (Victoria) Prize – Cheque and Engraved Plaque / Cheque and certificate Sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia (Victoria). Encouragement award for Photography War/Armed Services category to a winner and runner-up entrant.

The John Quinlivan TPI Special Recognition Award - Engraved plaque Sponsored by the TPI Association (Victoria) for a winner and a runner-up who produced entries under special hardship.

The Rehabilitation Work Group Encouragement Award – Cheque and certificate Sponsored by the Work Group at Austin Health (Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital) and awarded to a winner and runner-up deemed worthy of encouragement. Vice Admiral W.R. Creswell Poetry Encouragement Award in memory of Lloyd and Vera Saltmarsh – Framed photograph of the Vice Admiral Sponsored by The Naval Association of Australia - Box Hill & District. Awarded to entrant deemed worthy of encouragement.

Royal Australian Regiment Association Novice Award for a First Year Entrant in Painting - Cheque and Certificate Awarded to first time painting entrants to a winner and runner-up deemed worthy of encouragement.

Legacy Novice Award for a First Year Entrant in Writing – Cheque and certificate Awarded to first time writing entrants to a winner and runner-up deemed worthy of encouragement.

Defence Force Welfare Association Viewers’ Choice Award for Art, Craft and Photography - Cheque and Engraved Plaque for winner in each section Sponsored by the DFWA and awarded to the entry, in each of the identified categories, voted the most popular by visitors to the SWAC Exhibition. (One award and cheque presented for each of the Art, Craft and Photography categories).

The AWAS Association (Victoria) Encouragement Award - Cheque and book Awarded to an entrant deemed worthy of encouragement in the 3 Dimensional Art & Sculpture category.

National Servicemen’s Association (Northern Branch) “Centenary of Anzac – 100 Years of Service” Special Award - Cheque Sponsored by the National Servicemen’s Association (Northern Branch) and awarded to the best writing entry on this topic.

National Vietnam Veterans’ Museum Encouragement Award Sponsored by the National Vietnam Veterans’ Museum and awarded in the Photography – Open category.

The George Duncan Bequest Award (Patron’s Award) - Cheque Awarded by Major General David McLachlan across the visual art categories.

Geelong TPI Club Art Encouragement Award – Cheque Awarded to two entrants, across the visual arts categories, deemed worthy of encouragement by the Steering Committee.
