PROGRAM PREPARED BY ENCUENTROS INSTITUTO INTERNACIONAL FOR THE SPANISH DEPARTMENT OF NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Dates: Arrival in Lima: Friday May 14, 2010 Departure from Lima: Sunday June 27, 2010

Length of Program: 45 days total (25 days with Peruvian families)

Services provided by Encuentros Instituto Internacional will include:

• Student orientation on arrival • Student accommodation in homestay families in Lima, with partial board (breakfasts and dinner) on weekdays and full board on free weekends. • Student and faculty accommodation in hotels in Lima, Cusco and Nasca. • Students will receive selected meals while in Lima, Cusco and Nasca, and full board on Inca trail (refer to itinerary for details). • Inca Trail trek for students who wish to participate. • Student and faculty airport transfers and taxes within Peru. It does not include airport transfer and taxes for a person that does not arrive or leave with the group. • Housing for NC State faculty in Lima (with no meals). • Airplane travel for students and faculty/assistant Lima-Cusco-Lima. • Classroom/facility rentals in Lima. • Student and faculty ground transportation on excursions. • Student and faculty entrance tickets for all planned visits to museums and sites in Lima, Cusco and Nasca. Students must have a valid International Student ID card (ISIC) or they will not be allowed to hike the Inka Trail. Without this I.D. they will also have to pay the difference between the discounted and the regular price of an entrance ticket to an historical site or museum. • Tour guides and lecturers in Lima, Cusco and Nasca

This program is subject to modification. Please check day by day to see what meals are included or not included in the program (breakfast is always included). Entrance tickets to museums and places of cultural interest are included, unless otherwise indicated. Take note that there may not be ATMs or banks available in places like the Urubamba valley and Nasca. Do not forget to bring your International Student I.D. card to all places. A student without this I.D. will pay the difference between the discounted and the regular price of an entrance ticket, and will not be allowed to hike the Inka Trail. Before coming to Peru, please check for passport and ISIC expiration dates (expiration dates must not be sooner than the end of the trip). If you renew your passport in a later date, you must bring the old passport along with the new one to Peru.

MAY Friday 14 Flight US.A.-Lima. American Airlines, flight # 2383 from Miami arrives in Lima at 11:10 p.m. Transportation from the airport to hotel in Miraflores (Dinner is not included).

Saturday 15 Morning flight to Cusco. Pick up from hotel at 6:30 a.m. Taca Airlines flight TA9 leaves at 10:10 a.m.; arrives in Cusco at 11:30 a.m. Transportation to hotel in Cusco to leave luggage and to banks/Casas de Cambio to change dollars. Four-day trip to the Urubamba valley (1 hour by bus from Cusco). Bring a small bag or backpack with comfortable walking shoes, T-shirts, swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, heavy sweater, jacket or coat for the cold nights. Rest of the day to acclimatize (Cusco is at 11,500 ft.; the Urubamba valley is at about 9,400 ft. above see level). 7:30 p.m. dinner in the town of Pisac. Night stay in Pisac. (Box lunch and dinner are included). *In Urubamba and Cusco the group will meet every day at 6:00 p.m. at the hotel.

Sunday 16 9:00 a.m. visit of Pisac Inca ruins*. Lunch. Afternoon visit to Pisac market. 4:00 p.m. Trip to Ollantaytambo (67 km; 1 hour 15m). Dinner in in the town of Ollantaytambo. Night stay in hotel in Ollantaytambo. (Lunch and dinner are included). Note: the walk from the ruins to the town of Pisac is optional (about 1-hour walk; downhill steps, narrow path. Bring walking shoes, hat, water). There will also be a bus from ruins to town.

Monday 17 8:00 a.m. visit the Inca town and ruins of Ollantaytambo. Lunch. Afternoon: optional visit to Urubamba Market and /or visit ceramic workshop. Night stay in Urubamba. (Lunch is included, dinner is not included).

Tuesday 18 8:30 a.m. visit to the salt mines of Maras (with about 3,000 small pools) and the ruins of Moray. Picnic lunch in Chinchero. Visit the town and church of Chinchero (3,760 mts.) and textile community. Late afternoon return to Cusco (45 minutes by bus). Night stay in Cusco. (Lunch is included; dinner is not included).

Wednesday 19 Group divided in two (both groups will do the same activities in two different days). -Group 1: 8:00 a.m. pick up at the hotel to visit Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman. Horseback ride to Puka Pukara and Tambomachay (3-4 hours). -Group 2: 9:00 a.m. visit to Koricancha (“The Temple of the Sun”), the twelve cornered stone and Museo Inka. -Optional activity in the evening (7:00-8:00 p.m): Andean dances in the Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo (Av. El Sol). (Lunch is included for group 1; not included for group 2. Dinner is not included for both groups). *Important note: Horseback ride is optional. Students who choose to do the ride will do it at their own responsibility. There will also be a bus to these places the following day.

Thursday 20 -Group 2: 8:00 a.m. pick up at the hotel to visit Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman. Horseback ride to Puka Pukara and Tambomachay (2-3 hours). -Group 1: 9:00 a.m. visit to Koricancha (“The Temple of the Sun”), the twelve cornered stone and Museo Inka. -4:00 p.m. optional visit for both groups: the artist neighborhood and the church of San Blas (church closes at 5:30 p.m.). -6:00 p.m. meeting: preparing for the Inka trail. (Lunch is included for group 2; not included for group 1. Dinner is not included for both groups).

Friday 21 8:30 a.m. Trip to Andahuaylillas to visit church. Stop in bread factory in Oropesa. Visit the Inca ruins of Tipón. Picnic lunch in Tipón. Return to Cusco by 3:30 p.m. -Afternoon free to prepare for the Inca Trail. Evening movie (after group meeting): “Modern Marvels: Machu Picchu” (1-hour). (Lunch is included, dinner is not included).

Saturday 22 Begin the Inca Trail. Early morning pick up at the hotel. Bus to Km. 82 (9,000 ft.), where the trail begins. 5 hours hiking (7.5 miles) to Wayllabamba camp (9,840 ft.). (Lunch and dinner are included while in the Inca Trail). *Important note: Participation in the Inca Trail hike is optional. The hike is physically strenuous and students should be very fit if they choose to participate. Students who feel sick the day before the hike should not go. -For those not doing the Inca Trail: Free day in Cusco (Lunch and dinner are not included).

Sunday 23 -For Inca Trail hike participants: Climb to the Warmiwañuscca peak (13,776 ft). 3-4 hours of ascent (5.5 miles), 1 hour descent. Camp at Pacaymayu (about 12,000 ft.). This is the most difficult portion of the hike. There will be porters available only for this day (they charge around U.S.$15.00 or S/.40.00 per backpack to the top of the mountain and $20.00 or S/.60.00 to the campsite).

-For those not doing the Inca Trail: 10:00 a.m. trip to Ollantaytambo (with program director/assistant). Morning visit to Chinchero market. Afternoon free in Ollantaytambo. Night stay in Ollantaytambo. (Lunch is not included; dinner is included).

Monday 24 -For Inca Trail hike participants: 5-6 hour hike (5.5 miles) to Phuyupatamarca camp (11,939 ft).

-For those not doing the Inca Trail: 9:00 a.m. visit to andean community (1 hour from Ollantaytambo). Lunch in the community. Optional: traditional weaving classes with the people of the community. Afternoon return to Ollantaytambo. Evening trip to Machupicchu. Bus leaves from Ollantaytambo at 18:20 pm; train Backpacker leaves Piscacucho at 19:40 p.m., arrives in Machu Picchu at 21:14. (Lunch is included; dinner is not included). *Important note: Carry-on Baggage Allowance in the train to MachuPicchu: each passenger may take 1 bag or backpack, 05kg/11lb weight, and 62 inches/157cm (length + height + width). Baggage that exceed these measures will not the allowed.

Tuesday 25 -For Inca Trail hike participants: 6 hour hike (8.1 miles) to Machu Picchu (7,872 ft.). Check-in at hotel in Machu Picchu town.

-For those not doing the Inca Trail: early morning visit to Machu Picchu. Optional climb to the Wayna Picchu mountain (around two-hour hike, up and down the mountain)*. Optional 1-hour hike to Intipunku (“The gate of the Sun”) to meet the group arriving from the Inca Trail*. Afternoon: optional visit to Machu Picchu Museo de Sitio (20 minutes walk from Machu Picchu town). Optional thermal baths (entrance ticket, around US$3.00). Night stay in Machu Picchu. (Lunch and dinner are not included).

*Important notes: climbing the Wayna Picchu may be risky. Students who choose to climb the mountain will do it at their own responsibility. -Machu Picchu opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 17:00. The bus to and from the ruins takes 30 minutes each way. First bus to the ruins leaves at 5:30 a.m.; last bus from the ruins to town leaves at 17:30. -There is a 400-people limit per day to climb the Wayna Picchu mountain, divided in two turns: 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. (200 people maximum each time). If you want to have a better chance to climb the mountain you must be in line to take the bus no later than 5.15 a.m. You must register at Machu Picchu gate if you want to climb the mountain. -You must bring your passport and student I.D. card to enter the ruins. -Food is not allowed inside the ruins. You can buy snacks and drinks outside the ruins (they are expensive!) or bring your own snacks and drinks from Machupicchu village.

Wednesday 26 Morning visit to Machu Picchu. For those who want to climb the Wayna Picchu mountain departure from the hotel at 5:10 a.m (see “Important notes” above). For the others, departure to Machu Picchu ruins at 8:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. meet at hotel. 9:00 p.m. walk to train station Backpacker train to Ollantaytambo departs 21:45, arrives in Piscacucho 23.17. Bus to Ollantaytambo, arrives just after midnight. Bus from Ollantaytambo to Urubamba town (25 minutes) Night stay in Urubamba. (Lunch and dinner are not included).

Thursday 27 9:00 a.m. Optional voluntary work in elementary school of Urubamba community: paint outer wall of school, planting ornamental plants. Picnic lunch. Afternoon trip to Cusco. (Lunch is included, dinner is not included).

Friday 28 9:30 a.m. visit to La Catedral (visit hours: 10:00-11:30 a.m., 2:00-5:30 p.m.). 11:00 a.m. visit La Compañía Church (visit hours: 11:00am-noon, 3:00-4:00 p.m.) Afternoon free / optional activities: visit to “Arte Mágico Andino”, factory and store; jewelry craftwork in gold and silver. Visit to the “Mercado Artesanal del Cusco”. (Lunch is not included. Farewell from Cusco dinner is included).

Saturday 29 Morning flight to Lima. Pick up at hotel at 9.00 a.m. Taca Airlines flight TA10 leaves Cusco at 12:10 p.m.; arrives in Lima at 1:30 p.m. Afternoon orientation meeting (4:00 – 5:00 p.m.): “Living with Peruvian families”. (Lunch is not included). -Host families meet students at 6:00 p.m. (Breakfast and dinner are included with families, Monday through Friday. Lunch is also included on weekends).

Sunday 30 Free day.

Monday 31- Friday 4 Classes begin Monday 31.

JUNE Wednesday 2 2:00 p.m. pick up in LarcoMar. Lima city tour: Museo Larco Herrera; Plaza San Martín, Plaza Mayor, Convento de San Francisco, Iglesia de San Pedro. Dinner in downtown Lima. After dinner visit to the Circuito Mágico del Agua (record Guinness for being the biggest fountain complex in the world). Return to Miraflores by 9:30 p.m. (Dinner included) *Recommended: change of clothes in case you get wet in the fountains.

Saturday 5 Voluntary community work in orphanage, in one of Lima’s poorest neighborhoods. Students will volunteer to teach English, play games and/or organize different activities with the children. Pick up at 9:00 a.m. in LarcoMar. 1:15 hour trip, each way. Return to Lima by 2:30 p.m. Please bring gifts to the kids. Lunch is not included; you can bring a snack to the bus.

Sunday 6 Free day

Monday 7- Wednesday 9 Classes.

Thursday 10 Five-day trip to Nasca (300 miles south of Lima; 6½ hours by bus)*. Departure at 8:00 a.m. Bus will park in LarcoMar. Lunch in Huacachina oasis (you can bring your own box-lunch or eat in one of Huacachina´s restaurants). Evening video movie: The Nasca Lines. Night stay in Nasca. (Lunch is not included; dinner is included). *Note: Recommended pack list for the trip: a small bag with comfortable walking shoes, T-shirts, hat, swimsuit, sunscreen, sweater, jacket or coat for the cold nights.

Friday 11 Group divided in three (all groups will do the same activities in different days): -Group 1: 8:00 a.m./ 2:30 p.m. (depending on weather): 4-hour trip in dune-buggies. Visit pre- inca ruins of Cahuachi, Estaquería and Tambo de Perro. Optional sand-boarding in the dunes of Usaca. -Rest of the group: optional morning flight over the Nasca Lines (35-minute flight). Optional activity: ceramic workshop (two sessions in two days). Cost of workshop: around $7.00 or S/.20.00 (Includes materials and cook in kiln). (Lunch and dinner are included).

*Important notes: Flying over the Nasca lines is optional. Students who choose to do this activity will do it at their own responsibility and expense (around US$65.00 per person, plus S/.20.00 or $7.00 for airport tax). -Sand-boarding may be risky. Students who choose this activity will do it at their own responsibility.

Saturday 12 -Group 2: 8:00 a.m. / 2:30 p.m. 4-hour trip in dune-buggies (same as group 1 the day before). -Rest of the group: optional morning flight over the Nasca Lines. -Optional activities in the afternoon: 3:00 p.m. visit gold craftwork factory and store. Optional visit to Museo Antonini. -6:30 p.m.: the process of Pisco, Peru’s internationally known alcoholic beverage. -Evening: Afro-Peruvian music and dances (8:30-10:30 p.m.). (Lunch and dinner are included).

Sunday 13 -Group 3: 8:00 a.m. / 2:30 p.m. 4-hour trip in dune-buggies (same as groups 1 and 2 the days before). -Rest of the group: optional morning flight over the Nasca Lines (35-minute flight). Lunch in hotel: Pachamanca (a traditional Peruvian way of cooking). -Evening (8:00-10:00 p.m.): optional visit to cockfighting. (Lunch and dinner are included).

Monday 14 Nasca-Paracas-Lima. 6:45 a.m. departure to the National Reserve of Paracas. 10:30- 12:00 a.m. boat trip to the Ballestas Islands (weather permitting)*. Lunch in the port town of El Chaco. After lunch departure to Lima. Arrival by 7:00 p.m. Night stay with families (Lunch is not included; dinner with families).

*Note: The boat trip is optional. It may cause seasickness to some people. Bring jacket /raincoat for cold, humid breeze.

Tuesday 15-Friday 18 Classes

Saturday 19-Sunday 20 Free weekend.

Monday 21-Friday 25 Classes.

Saturday 26 Farewell lunch (included).

Sunday 27 Return to the U.S. American Airlines Flight # 918 departs from Lima at 10:50 p.m. Families will bring students to the airport or call a taxi (student pays the fee). You must be at the airport at least 4 hours before departure. (Please check in advance the time of departure). *Note: Student pays Lima-U.S.A. airport tax (around $31.00. Some airline companies include this tax in the cost of ticket).
