WHATLEY 16 AVENUE” AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR 17 SIGNS ALONG THIS HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE 18 WORDS “MICHAEL ‘MICKEY’ S. WHATLEY AVENUE”. 19 20 Whereas, the Honorable Michael “Mickey” Stewart Whatley was 21 born on October 7, 1935, in Charleston County and died on August 22 16, 2011; and 23 24 Whereas, he was the proud father of four children; and 25 26 Whereas, Representative Whatley attended the Southern Police 27 Institute, and was a 1978 graduate of the Baptist College of 28 Charleston; and 29 30 Whereas, he compiled an exemplary record as a law enforcement 31 officer, having served as Chief of Police for the City of North 32 Charleston from 1992 through 1994, as a Lieutenant with the 33 South Carolina Law Enforcement Division from 1984 through 34 1992, as President of the South Carolina Chapter of the Federal 35 Bureau of Investigation Academy from 1982 through 1983, and as 36 a member of the International Association of Police Chiefs; and 37 38 Whereas, he was a member of Dorchester Lodge 369 A.F.M., 39 Scottish Rite Omar Shrine Temple, the National Boy Scouts 40 Council of America, and served on the Strom Thurmond 41 Monument Commission; and 42

[4780] 2 1 Whereas, from 1958 through 1960 he served his country with 2 distinction as a member of the United States Army; and 3 4 Whereas, during his service as a member of the General Assembly, 5 Representative Whatley championed the interests of his county and 6 the State of South Carolina, and possessed great leadership 7 abilities and a clear vision for all South Carolinians; and 8 9 Whereas, it would be fitting and appropriate to recognize his great 10 accomplishments by naming a highway in Charleston County in 11 his honor. Now, therefore, 12 13 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 14 concurring: 15 16 That the members of the General Assembly request that the 17 Department of Transportation name Mall Drive in Charleston 18 County from its intersection with East Montague Avenue to its 19 intersection with Rivers Avenue “Michael ‘Mickey’ S. Whatley 20 Avenue” and erect appropriate markers or signs along this 21 highway that contain the words “Michael ‘Mickey’ S. Whatley 22 Avenue”. 23 24 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 25 the Department of Transportation. 26 XX 27
