District Trainer Forum Location: Salon A (1st Floor) Moderator: Adrian DeCoo An active and fun workshop designed to reflect the increasing diverse demands of the District Training Committee. As the training of District Leaders becomes ever more complex, the District Trainer and the District Training Team need the tools and competencies to be able to respond effectively. PDGs have knowledge, connections, training, experience - and lots of good ideas. The challenge is translating passion into action, equating PDG with Pro-active, Dynamic Guide. In this pre-institute session, Trustee Tom Thorfinnson will challenge PDGs to action - to continue using their knowledge and skills developed through the governor track

Human Rights – Especially for Girls Selkirk Ballroom (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: Julia Phelps, Past RI Director The Director of APU, a school for girls in Malawi and the Founder of the Joy Smith Foundation to stop human trafficking, team up to focus on the rights of girls. Memory Mdyetseni and Maness Samuel have travelled from Malawi to share the story of APU and how lives change when girls are given the opportunity of education. Joy Smith, former Canadian Member of Parliament will share the compelling crisis of human trafficking which strips young people, especially girls some in our own communities of their human rights. Global Grants - The Successes and Challenges Assiniboine Ballroom (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: Bryn Styles, RI Trustee Tom Thorfinnson, Vice Chair of the Rotary Foundation brings to this interactive breakout the most recent data on Global Grants. How is the new funding model working for large international projects with sustainable and measureable outcomes, postgraduate scholarships and VTT. Bring your questions and experience and be prepared to be engaged.
Speed Dating – Meet Your Coordinators and RI Staff Assiniboine Annex B (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Facilitator: Jeffry Cadorette, PDG Ever wonder who the Zone Coordinators are or how they can really help your clubs and district? This is your opportunity to meet the Rotary Coordinators, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinators, Public Image Coordinators, End Polio Now Coordinators and available RI staff.
Water And Sanitation – A Basic Human Right Selkirk Annex (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: Denis Boyd, Assistant Rotary Coordinator Sanitation was Rotary’s very first project and the need is ever greater today. Ron Denham, founder and Chair Emeritus of the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Committee WASRAG brings his passion and experience to assist districts and clubs with their water and sanitation projects. Learn how the TRF has approved new fund raising models for Water and Sanitation projects. This will be an interactive breakout so bring your potential projects, share your successes and ask your questions.
Rotary Peace Centers – Creating Professional Peacemakers Assiniboine Annex A (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: PDG, Chris Offer Root causes of conflict are poverty, inequality, ethnic tension and lack of access to education – all human rights. Chris Offer is on the Rotary Peace Centers Major Gift Initiative Committee for RI and while moderating this workshop will share his experience with the selection of scholars at the District and international level. Rotary Peace Center graduates will share their stories.

Get Your Plus 1 – All About Membership Selkirk Ballroom (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator – Drew Kessler, Assistant Rotary Coordinator Enter a dynamic and flexible Rotary Meeting. The program for this Rotary Meeting is all about membership. There will be three program speakers - one of the three is the Rotary Club of Edmonton Glenora that will share how they inducted 25 new members during their 25th anniversary year. This is an interactive breakout and you’ll receive a special “Plus 1 Makeup” for attending.
Circle of Understanding – Indigenous Circle Assiniboine Ballroom (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Facilitator: Rhett Sangster Rhett Sangster, Rotary Peace Fellow and currently Director of Reconciliation and Community Partnerships with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner in Saskatchewan will lead the Circle of Understanding. The circle will open with a blessing from an Elder from Treaty 1. This is an opportunity to learn about building relationships and serving First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities.
Human Rights – Engaging Members Selkirk Annex (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: Valarie Wafer, PDG This breakout will showcase ways in which Human Rights can be incorporated into Community Service, International Service, Vocational Service and Youth Programs. Participants of this breakout include: Raj Patel involved with Surgical Medical Missions in developing countries; Eduardo Costa a Rotary Peace Fellow who is currently a Global Peace Index Ambassador and David Newman a lawyer with a passion for the integration of peace, justice and human rights practices within and amongst organizations.
Celebrating 100 Years of The Rotary Foundation Assiniboine Annex A (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: Betty Screpnek, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator An interactive workshop on how to celebrate and focus on The Rotary Foundation during its 100th Anniversary Year. Hear about the plans and see the resources for clubs and districts. The Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinators will facilitate this engaging session.
Project Fair – Show and Tell Assiniboine Annex B (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Fair Coordinator – Lynne Ternosky A Project Fair to share the ideas and Rotary projects that are underway in indigenous communities as well as low income urban communities. Meet the Rotarians that have formed district and multi-district Rotary/Aboriginal partnerships. Learn about Stay in School programs, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, an amazing Literacy and Dental project in First Nations Communities in British Columbia, a Rotary Interact Club in an Aboriginal School and much, much more!
FRIDAY AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSIONS September 30 from 1:55 p.m. to 3:05 p.m. At Home Disasters – How to React Selkirk Ballroom (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: Pat Killoran, End Polio Now Coordinator The Fort McMurray fire has sparked once again the desire of Rotarians to come to the aid of local communities when disaster strikes in our own districts. Hear how districts act quickly, establish a method of receiving funds and work with the local community. DGE, Frank Reitz from the City of Fort McMurray will bring you up to date on the world wide Rotary support received by his community. Experience from the Calgary Flood, the Athabasca Fire and Hurricane Sandy will also be included.
New Flexibility For Members & Clubs – How does it work Selkirk Annex (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: PDG, Gayle Knepper There are lots of questions about the new flexibility for clubs …changing meeting times, meeting twice a month or meeting on line or in person. What about the new flexibility of membership…associate, corporate, youth and the flexibility that allows clubs in choosing their membership rules and requirements. Hear from clubs and how they are implementing this new flexibility. Emily Whitmer of RI Membership Development Department will also be on hand to answer your questions.
Not the Usual Dry Breakout – The 2016 Council On Legislation Assiniboine Annex A (Conference Centre 5th Floor) Moderator: PDG, Penny Offer The 2016 Council on Legislation may well be remembered as one of the most progressive in Rotary history. Several District delegates that attended Council will be at the Institute and here to share that experience. This breakout will bring you up to date on all of the important changes that make Rotary more flexible, why the increase in RI dues, the move to annual online annual Council meetings and how delegates and resolutions are selected. This will be a COL breakout like no other!

ROTARY NOW! A FORUM FOR YOUNG ROTARY LEADERS Friday, September 30 & Saturday October 1 – Humphry Inn Moderator: Jackie Hobal, Rotary Coordinator Location (Friday): Provencher Ballroom Location (Saturday): La Verendrye Ballroom This forum is for young leaders who have a “heart for service” and would like to learn alongside Rotary leaders. Discussions will focus will on human rights learning and discovery, but will also be a forum for designing a new era of Rotary global human rights leadership in our zones. The event will include inspiring encounters with human rights issues through speakers, workshops and tours of the newly open world class Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Delegates will be immersed in interactive experiences that offer both the inspiration and tools to make a difference in the lives of others.
