GUERNSEY COUNTY YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes – August 5, 2009 9:00 AM – GCDJFS

Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the July 8, 2009 meeting were accepted and approved on a motion from Larry Branham and seconded by Rhonda Pilck.

Treasurer’s Report: The expenses for the month of August totaled $360.00 (Family Pool Party – Cambridge City Pool). The income totaled $200.00 [Donations from Peoples Bank (Mud Madness) and Speedy Print (Pool Party) - $100/ea.]. The current checkbook balance is $738.13. The Treasurer’s Report was approved on a motion from Jean Stevens and seconded by Alicia Amato.

Guernsey County Youth Council: There was no report available for this meeting.

July/August Event Report: Family Pool Party – The pool party took place on Monday, August 3 from 7 – 9PM. The event was very successful and uneventful. There were over 300 people that showed up. The cost was $360, however Susan Jividen was able to secure $200 in donations to help pay for the pool. Speedy Print and Mr. Lee’s Restaurant each donated $100.

Other Community Events: Kellie Brown announced that after their August Board meeting, they will be officially taking the “MR” out of their name. They will now be known as the Guernsey County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

On August 10, the Magical Moments of Childhood will be sponsoring their annual “Back to School in Style” program. This year, they will only be serving children within the Children Services system. This will take place at the Stop 9 Church Youth Center during the hours of 9 – 11AM & 1 – 3PM. The kids will get backpacks, school supplies and haircuts.

It was also noted that the Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club are donating school supplies. Other agencies are also donating school supplies to Magical Moments.

On August 15, area churches will be holding their annual school supply and clothing giveaway. This will be taking place at the Cambridge City Armory from 9AM – 12PM.

There will be a Wiffle Ball Fundraiser to benefit Creative Options and the Samaritan Center Transitional Housing on August 22 at the Cambridge City Park. The cost is $30 for a team of 7 to 9 players. Call Stephanie Laube at 432-9271 for more details.

On Sept. 18, there will be a conference for Ohio Grandparents/Kinship Coalition – Ohio Kinship Care at the Crowne Plaza North Hotel in Columbus from 8AM – 4:30PM. Go to www.ohiograndparentkinship.org for more details.

The Kiwanis Club of Cambridge will be holding a pool party for kids involved in Kinship Care, House of Samuel, and Thompkins Center. The date has not been set yet.

Adjourn: The meeting was adjourned on a motion from Dale Ward.

Committees: September Event Planning – Mud Bowl – The Events and Logistics Committees broke into their respective groups to discuss the planning and details for the upcoming Mud Bowl Dodge Ball Tournament for area middle school students. The event is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at the Byesville Village Park. The tournament is run very similarly to the Mud Madness Volleyball Challenge. The Core Value that will be promoted will be Healthful and Balanced Living. It was also announced that the Kiwanis Club will be donating $500 to go toward the purchase to T- shirts for the participants. More details will be available at the next meeting.

 The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Guernsey County Children Services at 9:00 AM.
