Apprenticeships and Tech Schools Apprenticeships offer training, pay and sometimes benefits during training, AND NO TUDENT LOANS TO PAY BACK! Construction Industry Apprenticeships Students may request a copy of informational materials in the career center. Ask for carpentry apprenticeships. The only charge for the training is for books. Students who are accepted into the program work 40 hours a week at just under $14 per hour, are given a full medical benefits and pension package effective immediately. It is a five year program in which the student graduates with an AA degree and is certified as a journeyman electrician. Types of jobs available are: low voltage alarm systems, sound systems, high voltage systems, solar systems for business and home. Starting pay after training is $35 per hour. Apprentices may start their own businesses during training. Must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Must know basic algebra. Tuition Free Colleges College of the Ozarks – This college is known as “Hard Work U” by the Wall Street Journal. Students pay no tuition and work at least 15 hours a week at a campus work station. College of the Ozarks was named number 4 on the Princeton Review’s list of top 10 Stone-Cold Sober schools in 2008. www.cofo.edu Deep Springs College – is a two year, all-mail liberal arts college located on a cattle ranch in the Inyo-White Mountains of California’s High Desert. Students work 15 to 20 hours a week and receive free tuition, room, and board. www.deepsprings.edu Berea College – Thanks to a large endowment, every student admitted to Berea College in Kentucky receives a full-tuition scholarship valued at more than $90,000. Students are required to work 10 hours a week. Room, board and books are not covered. www.berea.edu Olin College of Engineering – Small college of 300 students in Needham, Massachusetts where every student receives four years of free tuition. It ranks as one of the top undergraduate engineering programs in the country. It is a new school with its first class graduating in 2006. www.olin.edu Cooper Union Located in Manhattan, this college offers degree programs in art, architecture and engineering. Every student receives four years of free tuition. The school was founded in 1858 by the inventor of Jell-O and the first locomotive in the U.S. Enrollment is around 900 students. www.cooper.edu Curtis Institute of Music – Like Juilliard, the Curtis Institute of Music is considered one of the most prestigious performing arts conservatories in the world. All students receive a full scholarship, and all piano, harpsichord, composition, and conducting majors are lent Steinway grand pianos. www.curtis.edu Alice Lloyd College – Small college in Pippa Passes, Kentucky.
