ACTE REGION I POLICY COMMITTEE MEETING LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm, December 4, 2013

Nancy J. Trivette, Region I Vice President opened the meeting at 1:34 pm.

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: Dave Keaton (Maine) moved to accept the Policy Committee minutes of the November 28, 2012 meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Allen Vaughan (Massachusetts) seconded the motion and the motion passed.

ACTE REGION I FINANCIAL REPORT: Nancy Trivette distributed the Region I financial report. She reported that approximately $400.00 will be spent on refreshments 2013 VISION Region I meetings. Other expenses for the region will be reimbursement for attendance at the Policy Meeting. Draft: 1/10/14

Standing Committee Reports: Audit Review- Annie Foster absent. Nancy Trivette reported that the Audit committee met by conference call in September. The audit was clean with no concerns.

Awards- Chet Wichowski reported for Ernie Powers (absent). Member awards due date is March 1; all applications are online and will be submitted electronically. Image Awards for non-members: Business Leaders, Business of the Year, etc. a due May 1. They will also be submitted online to ACTE, then distributed to the Awards Committees. All (additional) Regional I Awards (ie. Hanneman, Westbrook, etc.) will continue as posted on our Region website.

Bylaws- Mike Hawley (Ohio) – Mike reported that there are no recommended bylaws changes this year. A subcommittee has developed Regional Policy Manuals. A new subcommittee will develop a Manual for Divisions.

CTE Support Fund- Chet Wichowski supports more liaison work. Potential $20,000.00 will be needed to be raised for next year. It should be used to advocate for ACTE.

Nominations – Chet Wichowski (PA) - There were four applications for Region I Vice President. The committee has recommended two candidates (Frank Yesalavich and Dave Keaton) for the ballot.

Resolutions - Mark Pogliano (Michigan) reported that no resolutions were submitted to the committee.

Region I Conferences for 2013 and 2014 Nancy Trivette reported that the 2014 Region I meeting would be held during the National Policy Seminar (NPS) in Arlington, VA in March. There is a need for a program chair of the 2014 meeting. Discussion of topics included suggestions for the programs such as Perkins, CTE certification, and state organization and membership development resources. It was suggested that Steve Dewitt and/or Michael Connet be requested to speak about legislation and membership topics, respectively.

Region I Vice President Report Nancy Trivette reported that weekly legislative updates prepared by Steve DeWitt are being sent to the Policy Committee. The executive director’s reports (now prepared monthly) are not being sent to policy committees because they pertain to Board members more than policy committees. Nancy reported that she has participated in the Region Vice President conference calls; has been a member of several task forces and has reviewed the financial reports as the Finance Chair. Nancy said there is a continual push for membership, which is making a positive impact. There are also discussions about “ group memberships” for schools. Region Draft: 1/10/14

I conducted a successful pre-election campaign which surfaced several candidates for Region I Vice President. There are two candidates chosen by the Regional Nominating Committee as was reported by the committee.

Selection of Region I Awards Ernie Powers and the awards committee received one Region I award application this year. These are due on to the Awards Chair on September 30th. The Region I Outstanding Business/Education Partnership Award is presented to the Milton Hersey School in Pennsylvania.

Other regional awards were discussed at the meeting including:

 Scott Westbrook III Humanitarian Award – Al Vaughan (Massachusetts) nominated Nancy Trivette (NJ). The nomination was seconded by Mike Hawley (Ohio) and passed by the membership.  Jim Hanneman Memorial Award – Al Vaughan (Massachusetts) nominated Polly Mingyar (OH). The nomination was seconded by Chet Wichowski and passed by the membership.
