 DESCRIPTION OF TOWN

- SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION

Klaipėda was founded in the 13th century by Teutonian knights under the name of Memel. Several decades after its establishment, the city was granted self-governing rights. In 1420 the written documents mention Klaipėda’s name for the first time. Throughout its existence Klaipėda belonged to Samogitians, Prussians, Swedes, Russians, Poles and Nazi Germany. Due to historical circumstances, Klaipėda has one of the most diverse ethnic populations in Lithuania. During the years of reformation, Klaipėda was the most important town from which protestant ideas spread to Lithuania. Klaipėda’s architecture brings together unique modern buildings in harmony with an historical old town. The city is the most north-eastern ice-free port on the western coast of the Baltic sea with a population of about 200,000. The main industries of the region are conditioned by its location: all port and sea freight related businesses along with food processing plants. In 1997 one of the first Lithuanian free economic zones was established in Klaipėda. The city is an intersection of many international routes and is easy to reach by plane, bus, car, or train.

Klaipėda is the third biggest city of Lithuania, exceptionally attractive in summer because of its beaches, geographical setting, summer festivals and recreational services. It is a rapidly developing city that helps one to experience Lithuanian life in changing and moving political, economic, industrial and cultural world. Klaipėda is a symbol of new Lithuania merging history, cultural heritage, liberal minds and economic development. Charming resorts along the Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon give the opportunity to get acquainted with miracles of nature and traditional culture.

- MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS

 The largest annual event in Klaipėda is the traditional Sea Festival hosted at the end of July or beginning of August with carnivals and craft fairs. In 2013, July 26–28 Sea Festival will be organized in Klaipėda, and will fill the city with people, concerts, fish and crafts market, big and small ships. http://www.jurossvente.lt/  August 1 is the day of the establishment of Klaipėda. This year the city is celebrating its 761 birthday. Traditional festival of the city, organized in the territory of the city castle. During the day, the most important people of culture are awarded with the names of City Master of Culture. Also s special event "Visit to the Medieval Town" is organized, where citizens may get acquainted with historical dances, songs and art of chivalry.  International Opera and Symphony Music Festival "MUZIKINIS PAJŪRIS" ("Musical Seaside"). It is the only festival of such genres in the Western Lithuania. Each year festival is dedicated to new conception or topic. The biggest part of the program is made of the opera premiers and concerts, prepared by the organizer of the festival – Klaipėda State Musical Theatre. Nevertheless, symphony and chamber orchestras, ensembles, quintets, soloists and conductors from Lithuania and foreign countries are taking part at the festival as well.  In summer life is boiling in Lithuanian Sea Museum. It offers exclusive expositions of Nerija Fort, Aquarium, Marine Fauna, Sea Birds and Mammals, History of Navigation, and Ethnographic Fisherman’s Farmstead. Dophinarium is offering special programs and dolphin shows. However,

2 at the moment it is closed for reconstruction.  In 2013, August 16 – 18 the Live Music Beach festival “KARKLĖ 13” will be organized, with popular music concerts and artistic performances near the sea shore through the all weekend. http://www.karkle.com

Summer is the most culturally busy time in Klaipėda. Festivals, the Baltic Sea with its wonderful beaches, and nature resorts attract many tourists not only from nearby countries, but from all of Europe and the world.

Klaipėda is easy to reach by all means of transportation.

BUSES The bus station is across the street from the railway station. It is easy to reach the city center by taking a public bus number 8, 8a or 1. Timetable is available on the website. RAILWAY Trains from all major Lithuanian cities run to Klaipėda. There are tree trains from Vilnius to Klaipėda per day. The journey from Vilnius to Klaipėda takes 5 hours. Arriving by plane: Air traffic serving Klaipėda region lands in Palanga airport, 25 km north from the city. Direct flights from Copenhagen, Oslo, Riga. Buses from Palanga airport scheduled every 20 minutes, taxis available or you may rent a car.

- TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE)

The main means of public transportation in town are buses and minibuses. Their routes enable passengers to travel from one side of the city to the other within 40 minutes. A bus ticket costs 2.00 litas in kiosks and 2.40 litas when buying a ticket from a bus driver. With student card there is a 50 % discount for bus tickets – 1.00 litas, but only when buying ticket in kiosk. LCC International University is easily accessed with the public transportation. Buses number 5, 9, 14 and 17 run with the frequency of 5 minutes from and to the city center. The public buses function according to the schedule, which can be found at nearly every bus stop along with the route of specific buses. More information: http://www.klaipedatransport.lt

Minibus ride (which is faster and more convenient because it stops at the request of the passengers) costs 2.50 litas.

Taxis are another reasonably priced transportation option. For example, the ride from LCC International University to the center costs approximately 10 litas.

LCC International University is a private international liberal arts university, offering bachelor and master level programs in humanities and social sciences.

Lithuanian Language and Culture Studies at LCC International University have been designed to address various needs. Currently we have Lithuanian language studies at 5 different levels and tracks for non-native Lithuanian speakers. Some of those studies are part of the required general education courses in the degree programs while other studies are optional. LCC began Lithuanian as a Foreign Language studies in 1997. Since then there have been over 100 students enrolled in these courses for credit. In Fall 2012 there were about 80 non-native Lithuanian language speakers enrolled in Lithuanian language studies for credit.

5 LCC International University has offered Lithuanian as a foreign language for more than 17 years. The faculty of the Lithuanian Studies Department has many years of experience in working with students with various language levels: beginners, intermediate, advanced and superior; as well as in working with students from various language backgrounds. Every year more than 100 students take the course of Introductory Lithuanian (LTH 101 Introductory Lithuanian I and LTH 102 Introductory Lithuanian II). EILC courses have been successfully organized at LCC International University for seven years (2006 and 2007 – 1 group, 2008, 2009, 2010 – 2 groups, 2011 – 1 group, 2012 – 2 groups). During all those years the academic staff of LCC International University gained a lot of experience, improved professional skills, tested different methodology and has developed a comprehensive methodological approach, and has seen very good student results at the end of every course. Expertise is gained, tested and developed in summer courses and during all year round courses.

EILC courses at LCC International University combine the modern, interactive teaching of experienced faculty with a wide cultural program that introduces historical context, political actualities and cultural heritage of Lithuania. This course is specifically designed for students who have no knowledge of Lithuanian, helping them to survive and get acquainted with new culture. The goal of this course is in three weeks of studies to equip students to function and to live in Lithuania during the period of their Erasmus program, helping them to deal with linguistic and cultural challenges.

ACCOMMODATION ON CAMPUS – NEUMANN HALL AND ENNS HALL

Infrastructure of LCC International University provides not only very good learning environment, but also allows students to live comfortably on campus and to enjoy community life. Student residences, Neumann Hall (built 2007) and Enns Hall (built 2011), are available for EILC students in summer. Both dormitories are only 2 min. walk from the academic building.

Neumann Hall is LCC’s home to 196 residents. Located in the center of the LCC International University campus, living in Neumann provides you with a 2-minute walk to classrooms, faculty offices, the gymnasium and fitness center and the cafeteria. Neumann is split by two wings. There are 5 floors on each wing, each containing a student “pod” specifically designed to optimize community development. Each pod is made up of 5 rooms where 20 residents live and have a pod lounge where they cook meals in the kitchen and eat and relax together in the dining/living room. Student rooms in Neumann Hall are shared by 4 residents who each have their own bed, desk & closet and share a common entry area and bathroom. The West Wing houses 5 pods and a large lounge space on the 1st floor as well as the facility’s main laundry room. The East Wing is home to 5

6 more student pods as well as a beautiful Chapel on the 6th floor. The residence hall also has a computer lab, TV lounge, game room, art studio and study room in central common areas.

Enns Hall opened in August 2011 for its inaugural year. This student residence hall is home to 140 students and has 8 apartments on the first floor for faculty and staff living. The four floors of student living spaces also include a student study room featuring personal study carrels, as well as two rooms with table for group project work, a laundry facility, a Residence Life Resource room, and the Resident Director's apartment.

A place in a shared dormitory room for the duration of EILC course might range from 225 Litas (65 EUR) to 375 Litas (109 EUR) depending on the room. Students will be asked to indicate their room choice. Accommodation form will be sent all accepted students.

BEACHES (will be visited with the program) There is no better place to spend leisure time than at the beach where one can stroll or just sunbathe and relax listening to the murmuring sea, enjoying white sand and bright sun The beaches of Klaipėda are favorite leisure spots for the locals and Klaipėda guests. Here one can play beach volleyball, football, enjoy riding a water-scooter. The beaches often serve as venues for various entertainment events and there are special playgrounds for children. Outdoor cafes offer snacks and beverages.

12 NERINGA (50 km from Klaipėda) (will be visited with the program) The Curonian Spit is a narrow peninsula 97 km long, whose western shore is washed by the Baltic sea, and with the Curonian Lagoon to the east. The Curonian Spit national park has been established in the 52 km of the peninsula, which is part of the Lithuanian Republic. The landscape of the Curonian Spit is unusual, with its sand dunes and rare plants adapted to life in such an environment. The forests that grow in the sandy soils are predominantly pine and hand-planted hill pine. Curonian Spit administrative unit Neringa consists of four little towns: Nida, Preila, Pervalka and Juodkrantė. Going from Klaipėda to Nida only 50 km it is possible to visit all those towns and to admire national park. Neringa has been popular with artists and writers for centuries. Each year there are more and more visitors from all over Lithuania and from abroad. Here they can find not only a well-protected natural landscape and old architectural monuments, but also a modern economy. Welcoming hotels and guesthouses provide a variety of services and organize activities. The territory frequently hosts cultural and sporting events, art exhibitions, and conferences. Neringa has been included in UNESCO’s list of world heritage monuments. PALANGA (25 km from Klaipėda) (will be visited with the program) One of the most popular Lithuanian resort towns. In summer it attracts about 200,000 tourists and holidaymakers from Lithuania and neighboring countries. It is only 25 km from Klaipėda to Palanga (3 litas by minibus).This is a wonderful place by the sea to share the fantastic pleasure and romance of the sunset from the pier standing over the waves. There are lots of restaurants, bars, clubs, and places to eat and spend time for any taste. Places of interest in Palanga: Botanical Garden, Amber Museum, Pier, HBH Brewery (Žibininkų kaimas, Tel. ORVYDAS GARDEN (South from Salantai, 60 km from Klaipėda) Fantastic garden of different plants, stones, monuments, wooden sculptures, mixing and joining to one unit pieces of sacral art and soviet cultural relics, primitive and professional art. This garden was established during soviet time in 1960, constantly created and recreated during 30 years by all Orvydas family. This unique piece of art in Lithuanian culture attracts lots of people.

ŠIAULIAI (150 km from Klaipėda) Šiauliai is the fourth largest city in Lithuania, well known by Hill of Crosses 12 km north of Šiauliai. No visit to Lithuania, so it’s said, is complete without a trip to the Hill of Crosses (KryžiųKalnas). Its history is a hotbed of dissent, and although some say the first planting of a cross dates back to the Middle Ages, no evidence exists until 1831 when crosses were planted to mark the Lithuanian uprising against the Russians of that year. It really got going after the death of Stalin, when Lithuanians returning from the gulags began planting crosses in memory of those who never returned. Visitors are welcome to add their own crosses, or to just walk around with their mouths wide open in awe of the place. The rather large Jesus taking pride of place at the bottom of the hill was a personal present from the Pope, who visited the site in 1993. It is important place to visit to get the sent of Lithuanian sacred art and worldview.

SPORTS FACILITIES AT LCC LCC’s Michealsen centras (LCC campus, Kretingos str. 36) is a multi-purpose building constructed for the benefit of the LCC community and Klaipėda residents. The 2500 m2 center can host over 1,000 people for sports events and more than 1600 for auditorium events. The building is serving LCC and the Klaipėda community as both a sports and a cultural center. Modern equipment meeting international requirements will make the sports hall suitable for university-level, international, and professional basketball and volleyball tournaments. The sports hall is also accompanied by a fitness center. The hall converts easily to an auditorium for public events and community gatherings. A portable stage, sound system and lighting equipment make the Michealsen centras an excellent auditorium for hosting theatrical, vocal and musical performances. The large foyer outside of the hall is suitable for banquets, receptions and conferences. The Michealsen centras general business hours are from 8.30 am to 10 pm. The Fitness center is available for use for students and staff of LCC and along with the Gymnasium. Price: entrance to Fitness center for student cost 15 litas for one month.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE This course is designed for students who have no previous knowledge of Lithuanian. The main aim of the course is to provide ‘survival’ Lithuanian (level A1, A2) for future Erasmus students. The primary objective of the course includes language learning – basic communication skills through building a good foundation of vocabulary, communicative phrases, sentence structures, and grammar. Various everyday topics (travelling, getting food, shopping, introductions, and family) are addressed. The secondary objective is to introduce Lithuanian traditions, customs, and norms of behaviour, as well as the historical and cultural context.

TEACHING METHODS The teaching methodology is based on a “communicative language teaching” approach in the classroom. Activities include listening and reading of various dialogues and short texts; doing grammar and communication exercises; role playing; playing games which require language; listening to music and watching movies; singing Lithuanian folksongs and popular songs. As every classroom is provided with two language instructors the main effort will be given to oral language skills – practical phrase learning, accurate pronunciation and communicational role situations. Grammar exercises provided by the instructors will develop a strong basis for understanding of the structure of Lithuanian language, skills that can be further developed after the completion of the intensive language courses.

The tentative schedule of language component equips students with basic language skills and gives possibility to apply learned material in practice. Language component is tightly connected with cultural program. During cultural program new words, practical situations are created, learned and encouraged.

COURSE FACILITIES The course will be provided with fully equipped classrooms. The classrooms have Smart Board, computer, audio and visual equipment and access to the Internet. - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE CULTURAL ELEMENTS INCLUDED IN THE COURSE: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS

The cultural component of the course will include lectures, movies, guided visits and day trips. The cultural program includes:  Overview of Lithuania’s history and cultural heritage. Students will watch 2 movies (“Lithuania” and “Vienui vieni”) followed by discussion.  Cultural program consists of many tours and visits: students will have a Klaipėda city tour, will visit Klaipėda Castle Museum, Maritime Museum and Dolphinarium, will go to Palanga city and its famous Amber Museum.  Two day trips. The first is to Curonian Spit protected by UNESCO. During this trip students will visit Hill of Witches, will learn the legends of this region, and see the famous dunes. In Nida, the main town of the spit, students will visit the house of Thomas Mann and amber workshop. During second day trip students will visit National Park of Žemaitija and Military museum and festival of Baltic History in Apuolė; they will see small towns of Western Lithuania and will experience ordinary village life.  Overview of norms of behavior in Lithuanian, customs of business and private communication and their comparison with other cultures will be presented in lecture of guest speakers “Characteristics of Lithuanian Identity”.  Lecture about main Lithuanian traditions, regions, dialects, folklore, music instruments and behavior

and lifestyle (a visit to Klaipėda Ethnocultural center)  A special event called the Evening of Traditions will feature traditional music, dance, and food. Students will also have the possibility to share about their cultural heritage and discover commonalities among different European cultures.  A closing ceremony and closing party will be held in the place of local tourism on the shore of Baltic Sea.

An important aspect of the cultural component of the program is practical application of vocabulary studied in the classroom, further improvement of language skills and vocabulary building (for example, during the evening of traditions, students are provided with names of typical Lithuanian food), and practice in various communicational situations.

The cultural program will depend upon the weather and may be adjusted to the interests of participants. All EILC participants will be asked to contribute to the costs of cultural program. The estimated fee is 50 EUR.

DESCRIPTION OF CULTURAL ELEMENT OF THE COURSE The cultural elements of the course will help students to adjust to Lithuania. They will introduce historical, cultural, economic and political life of Lithuania and Lithuanian people. The cultural elements of the course will consist of about 5 hours per week plus one day each weekend for trips to various places of interest.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CULTURAL ELEMENT To provide an introduction to Lithuanian culture, traditions, and literature. To introduce main historical events of Lithuania. To present actual political and economic context. To experience Lithuanian celebrations, try traditional food, learn folklore songs and dances.

In order to follow our institutional teaching/learning model which focuses on an interactive learning environment, LCC ensures that there are always two lecturers in the classroom at the same time.

To teach the courses we have a staff of Lithuanian Studies Department members that consists of 4 language teachers: Dr. Vaida Drukteinytė, Rūta Grumadaitė, Eglė Zalatoriūtė and Radvyda Vaišvilaitė. For teaching assistance, cultural orientation and social help the courses will have 4 EILC student assistants and 1 part-time administrator and 1 part-time administrative assistant. Guest speakers provide cultural programs and lectures about the historical and political situation of Lithuania.
