Osgoode Township High School Grade 9 Health and Physical Education (PPL10) Healthy Active Living Course Outline

OVERVIEW

The health and physical education curriculum has been designed to provide learning experiences that will help students realize their potential in life. Students will develop: * an understanding of the importance of physical fitness, health, and well- being, and the factors that contribute to them; * personal commitment to daily vigorous physical activity and positive health behaviours; * the skills and knowledge they require to participate in physical activities throughout their lives.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Physical Activity By the end of the course, students will: * demonstrate personal competence in applying movement skills and principles; * demonstrate knowledge of guidelines and strategies that enhance participation in recreation and sport activities.

Active Living By the end of the course, students will: * participate regularly in a balanced instructional program that includes a wide variety of enjoyable physical activities that encourage lifelong participation; DAILY ACTIVE participation is expected; * demonstrate improvement in personal health-related physical fitness; * demonstrate safe practices regarding the safety of themselves and others.

Healthy Living By the end of the course, students will: * identify the factors that contribute to positive relationships with others; * explain the consequences of sexual decisions on the individual, family, and community; * demonstrate personal strategies to deal effectively with the social influences that contribute to the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (e.g., cannabis); * identify strategies to minimize potentially dangerous situations (e.g., violence prevention, injury prevention).

Living Skills By the end of the course, students will: * use appropriate decision-making skills to achieve goals related to personal health; * explain the effectiveness of various conflict resolution processes in daily situations; * use appropriate social skills when working collaboratively with others. Course Outline Osgoode PHE – Sep. 2014 ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Student work and performance will be assessed and evaluated upon the curriculum’s overall learning expectations for the course. When work is assessed, comments will be made on student work/performance as feedback to support the student’s ongoing learning and improvement. Examples of assessment may include informal quizzes, rough drafts of assignments, practice drills or student-teacher discussions. When work is evaluated, a level or percentage grade will be assigned to student work/performance according to a rubric or marking scheme. Examples of evaluations include daily active participation, formal quizzes and tests, performance tasks, assignments, and summative tasks.

70% Formative (Term) Evaluation Evaluation by Overall Expectation: Students are evaluated on expectations in each of the four strands (Physical Activity, Active Living, Healthy Living, Living Skills), as noted on page one above.

30% Summative Evaluation Tasks 15% Physical Activity Unit 10% Physical Fitness 5 % Student-teacher Conference

TEACHING STRATEGIES

A variety of teaching and learning styles will be used in this course:  cooperative learning  demonstrations  laboratory exercises  task cards  assignments  self-reflection/logs  group work  presentations • personal inventory LATES TO CLASS Lates to class will result in 1) a warning, 2) a detention, 3) a call home with detention and 4) a visit to the office.

ABSENCES FROM CLASS The responsibility for all material covered in this course rests with the student. If a class is missed, an effort should be made by the student to find out what was covered in that class. If a student is absent for any testing, the student should make arrangements for make-up testing within one week. If a student feels ill and is unable to participate in a class, a note is required the following class. If, for some reason (ie. Illness or injury), a parent wishes to have a son or daughter excused from participation in class, then a note signed by the parent is required. When a student is unable to participate due to a lengthy illness/injury the student may be assigned an alternative written assignment or project. The student will also be required to submit a medical note with regards to the illness or injury and return to participation.

DRESS CODE

Students must dress appropriate to the activity: running/athletic shoes, socks, sweats or shorts (no jeans, dresses, etc.) and outdoor clothing for outside activity. T-shirts and/or sweatshirts must be worn. Students must have appropriate gym wear and are not to wear the same clothes as they do for other classes. The O.T.H.S. Dress Code Policy provides more guidelines for appropriate clothing.

Course Outline Osgoode PHE – Sep. 2014 CONCUSSIONS

The OCDSB has a formal protocol for concussion related injuries. If a concussion has been diagnosed over the summer break or anytime during the semester, the Request to Resume Participation-Concussion Related Injuries form must be completed by a physician before the student returns to class/intramural and interschool activities. Please contact the PE teacher and/or Department Head for details.

Note: Cell Phones, food, chewing gum and drinks are not allowed in the gymnasium.
